well toby is now home good news so far no signs of any tumurs. he has his lungs and a gastroscope done. The diagnosis is metabolic acidosis. he is no longer allowed any hard feeding containing carbohydrates. he has never to be without hay/haylge. has anyone had any experience with this condition and any help as i am at alose. vet said another couple of days and he would have been dead. his respirator rate is still very fast but i am hoping it will slowly go down in the next couple of days. when last checked at 21.00 it was 20 bpm

Sorry cant offer any advice at all as never heard of condition but just wanted to say hope things work out for you and horsey.

hi hairy molly how is your lovely girl doing. my lad is quite poorly was in tims for 4 days and think we might have a long time to recover although diet is going need to stay the same long term

metabolic acidosis is more commonly seen in ruminants (cows especially) that get in a grain store. It basically causes their gut flora to ferment the carbohydrates into an acidic gassy mess. This is then partly absorbed by the body and starts to cause the symptoms you've seen.

It is fatal quite quickly in ruminants because of how their metabolism works. In horses it's not as quick but can still be fatal. It doesn't affect the way cows digest food afterwards because their diet shouldn't be high carbohydrates, but in horses it can make their gut supersensitive to the carbohydrate leading to a relapse.

Obviously your vet knows what he's talking about, so stick to his advice. Can you put an entire bale of hay or haylage in with him at a time?

I'm so glad that he's on the mend. that's really good news.

thanjs very much jen. he is a very lucky boy as he could have been dead if i hadn't notice the respiratory rate going through the roof. he has 3 very large haynets in with him all the time to make sure he doesn't run out as he has only to get 2 x handfulls of lightly mollased chaff and soy oil and of course his bio premium pro biotic stuff. i am so glad he is home and know he is such a lucky lad
