I thought i was being loooooovely by saying GOOD LUCK!!

I also thought i gave some good advice

My comment re-xing the 2 breeds was aimed at the irrisponsible breeder..... NOT JODIE

I disagree with the fighting dog malarkey-regardless of the purpose- the owner will determine its behaviour-in they way they teach the dog.
I also feel if she has her heart et on a mastiff......SHE SHOULD DEFO GET ONE...... but from a reputable breeder.......Not a back street breeder tying to make a quick buck from people like jodie.

Again GOOD LUCK JODIE

My concern wouldn't be the size of the dog but rather the breeder. I would be worried about hip dysplasia, Entropion etc. -- real, expensive genetic concerns that afflict Mastiffs -- and whether the parents have been tested or not (this, you ought to be firm about). This type of approach is usually taken by those with a vested interest in improving the health of their chosen breed. The concerns don't automatically go away by breeding two different types of Mastiff, especially if the sire and dam aren't strong examples of the breed in the first place. Please, make sure you ask this breeder tons and tons of questions.

As for Mastiffs, I've only ever met docile, sweet ones. My only horror story concerns my mum's friend whose Mastiff bit the head off their new kitten on Christmas morning. However, it sounds to me like the dog was guarding a chew toy and, as usual, the idiotic owners were at fault for not understanding this breed's natural tendency to guard.

Hust want to say a MASSIVE thank you to you all for the advice, everyone has different opinions

Hi Jodie,

Just wanted to say that I hope whatever puppy you get will give you years of pleasure. There has been some very sound advice given on here, and I, for one, am looking forwards to hearing all about your new dog, whatever it is, and whenever you get it. Just get that camera primed.

This is the joy of Forums, there is always someone to help and share their experiences and opinions, the good the bad, and the ugly, a real melting pot.

Btw, which Dog Forum did you join?

Best of luck with your pup! Last year I looked after a ridgeback x mastiff. Looked like Clifford (those of you with children will know) but he was lovely!
Now to be negative...why aren't these crossbreds just called mongels, as surely thats what they are?
I had, in Australia, a kelpie x dobermann. He had all the herding instinct of the collie and all the guarding instinct of the dobe. He was a lovely dog, but it has to be said, a bit unstable.
Anyway, I truly believe that most of a dogs character is in its upbringing so take good care of him, and lots of socialisation classes!

Have fun.

Hi, I've come to this thread pretty late, just wanted to wish you good luck in your search for a pup, you seem very sensible and open to advice and I believe these are the main requirements for successful dog ownership. The Kennel Club is a good source of reference for breeders if you find these pups aren't suitable.

You've had such great advice on here and I am sure whatever pup you choose will be very lucky. Look forward to hearing all about him/her.
