Thought I'd drop in and give an update to those that gave some good advice or just a kind ear about my new ottb mare.

You may remember she came to me with a list of issues and was plainly telling me she was unhappy.

Initially she had severe mud fever. 10 days box rest, steroids, anti-inflammatories, pain relief.. sorted.

Then we scoped for ulcers, she had plenty, treated with omeprazole injections. Lovely. Huge improvement. However, not in the behaviour department - still a witch to tack, rug etc.

So we did a lameness work up and x-rays. She has kissing spine, also broken back HPA. So she was sent to hospital for surgery. Then I had a phone call from the surgeon who felt her KS wasn't severe enough to warrant surgery, so would not operate on her, however, they did find a traumatic wither injury. She's also lame behind.

So, she's had steroids in the wither and come home. She had another lameness work up today and her x-rays are being sent elsewhere for another opinion. I think everyone is leaning towards a bone scan next, but unfortunately, I do need to factor in my insurance limits. It's also a very real possibility she'll never be ridden.

So yeah, there you go. What horribly bad luck 😅 But, a good reminder to listen to the horse.

On a happier note, she's well in herself and looking a lot better, I'll share some photos of her glow up. First two photos were December, the others were in May.
Of course, she's lacking real muscle and topline, she is very much not in work. We do little bits of physio and stretching, and some in hand work, but not enough to build that up yet.

Has anyone else dealt with a wither injury? Any success stories?

A friend of mine had a TB who fractured her wither when she had a freak accident (reared and flipped over when being worked one day) and was also found to have mild kissing spines that weren't deemed severe enough for an operation. She presented as slightly lame too but not really noticeable unless you looked long and hard x

She recovered perfectly fine and was ridden. Did lots of in hand walking, long lining, hacking up and down hills when ridden and lots of pole work for her rehab plan.

She eventually sold her however as she didn't have the time to continue to rehab with a young baby, full time job, house etc x

Thank you so much for your response.

Do you know what treatment they opted for, if any?

It's nice to hear they had success with rehabbing her. Thank you for sharing. Maybe there is a glimmer of hope for my girl 🤞

That's alright :)

If I remember correctly, she went in for surgery for removal of the chip of broken wither, had a few days box rest and then started the rehab plan with walking out, long lining, working over poles etc to help strengthen up her back and build up muscle where she had lost it. Over time my friend upped how much she did with her and when she did it, eventually ending with her getting back on board and having some flatwork lessons and stuff. She didn't get round to jumping her as she was unable to give the horse enough time with other responsibilities etc x

Wow she looks amazing. You've worked really hard on her.

I too knew one who recovered well. Polo pony, reared and flipped. Any chips removed, allowed time to heal. She worked happily into her mid twenties.

I haven’t dealt with a wither injury but my friend has , she is on Tiktok as The Magnificent Penny, they have just finished rehabbing… 🥰

What a pretty pony :) She looks fab now. No experience with wither injuries, but my vet dealt with a horse that had gone over backwards off a lorry ramp onto concrete, and basically totalled his spinous processes in the wither area. The bits were removed, and other than having a bit of a weird topline from the now flat withers, he made a full recovery.
