Well I went back to A and E after my Dad told me I was not going private as it was too expensive and I don't earn enough. Fair point really! :p. So only a 2 hour stint in there from entry to exit and the news

NO BROKEN BONES!!!!! :D :D :D :D

phew, but rand osteo immediately and he still not happy, says something not right muscle wise in lower part of back, due to pain that I am having and the shape of my lower back, so I am going to see him tomo at 4. Rang work and they are being nice for once and actually letting me do 5 hour day today, 6 hour tomo and fri and 7 hrs next week. I think I am going to have to cancel Newquay this weekend though I just cant see it being a goer. I really really want to go. Really bad, but I am just not going to enjoy it if my back is in agony all the time and I dont think I will be able to drive the 5 hrs there and back and no one else will do it instead of me, so we will have to do some car shuffling to get them all in.

oh well, never mind, I will just get majorly drunk at home instead. :D

Glad it's not more serious, but ditto amymay, you should be signed off work and recovering properly.

For what it's worth I had a private MRI last year and it cost 300 pounds which seemed very reasonable to me after 10 months of back pain. It was only due to the MRI that I was correctly diagnosed, was able to get the correct treatment and finally (18 months after the injury!) was pain free.

I'd was thinking MRI too....

I'm a slave to my back - remember that pain is there for a reason, it's telling you that something is wrong. Listen to your back, it's simply not worth trying to do anything until you know what is wrong, and it feels stronger. I had an MRI to find three discs damaged, and two ops later, am now pain free.

Please do go off sick, and find out exactly what's wrong. Huge ((((hugs)))) sm x

I know I should go off sick but I really really can't. I have 10 days sick pay a year and I have used all of those, so I wont be earning at all. I get paid under £6 an hr as it is (my job is one of the worst paid jobs in the world and I am now NVQ trained to do it) and so I bring home nothing a month and so have very little to live off, if I dont go to work I wont earn simple as, and I cannot afford to do that. Its sad I know, but I dont have insurance and I refuse to use one of those compensation companies as I think they drive everyones premiums up unnecessarily.

If you were in my situation what would you do?
I ask this in complete honesty because I have to eat and live and pay for the horse (although I may seriously have to consider getting rid of him) and I cant do that with no money. I am not trying to be rude, I am asking for advice......

I really do feel for you, but in the end you have GOT to put your back first. If the medical profession were seriously thinking there was a possibility of a break in your back, its obviously bad.
I understand you dont get paid, I used to be like that, could you speak to your prents who maybe able to finacially help for a few weeks? Maybe it would be worth looking into benefits that you could claim. Incapacity benefit for example.

Well I already live with my parents so I pay reduced rent etc, but I dont like living off of them, my Dad is semi retired, my mum is retired and its just plain not right. (i am 24 and should be living on my own by now) I am trying my hardest to get another job that uses my degree and my NVQ but its tough out there at the moment, and my osteo said gentle excercise is better than none. So unless he advices no work anymore tomorrow then I will keep going slowly and not doing too much to keep some money coming in.

What job do you do currently if you don't mind me asking? Is is it full time or just a part time job? Is there any way you could take on a 2nd job P/T aswell - for instance, bar work etc. You can make a nice bit of extra cash doing things like that. Either that or seriously think about getting another job - get your CV on all the job sites like Monster, Jobsite, Reed etc etc. If you're in agricultural type work then there is Delacy recruitement and I think Goddard Gadd who specialise in agricultural/equestrian jobs.

In all honesty, get out there, find yourself a job that pays you properly! I just changed jobs in Aoril after 6 plus years at my last job earning a pittance and just not seeing any future there. I have since moved and just bought a house this year although am still at home til i actually move in (and I am 32!). Don't put pressure on yourself to be moving out and that you should have at 24. Times have changed an awful lot and it is not easy these days to get on the property ladder, especially if you are a single person with a single income! Plus, renting is almost as expensive as paying a mortgage!

With regards to your back - i would get someone else have a look or ask for an MRi or even ultrasound to be doubly sure. It may well be just serious deep bruising BUT if you have damaged your discs then this will not really show on an x-ray and, quite frankly there are plenty of people who have been told by A&Es that they are ok, only to find out later they are in fact not.

hi again - you can claim Incapacity Benefit while you are off sick, have a look on the DWW website. You may also be able to get DLA (disability living allowance) - may be worth contacting the citizens advice thingy ? sm :)

Thank you. I am a NVQ level 3 trained qualified nursery nurse with a 2.1 degree in Zoology (1st in my dissertation) from Southampton Uni. I apply for around 4/5 jobs a week, update my CV all the time and re post on most of the websites you mentioned and will add to the ones I am not on. I work full time, 8 hr shifts (may up to 9 hr) between the hours of 7.30 am - 6 pm. Yes I could take on bar work on the weekend/ weekdays and probs will have to if cant work full hours at work.

As some one mentioned above MRI scan is not that expensive I will invest in one I think. Apparently I have scoliosis if my top spine (shown in the first lot of x rays) which I did not know, so a full MRI scan on back would be useful. but will confer with osteo tomorrow too.

I will look into this but I really don't want too, its just too risky there are too many loopholes you have to jump through and at the moment I can still work and I don't want to take money of people who really need it.

Hey, YOU really need that money if you are unable to work thru pain !! You have every right to it, the system is there to be used. Your health is soooo important.

((((((((hugs)))))))) sm x

Ok, so, but I really do feel like I am being a mooch off of the system. I will need to make a doctors appointment too. Still have not informed my doctors of the incident etc and any way need more muscle relaxants.

Well I will bite the bullet and at least read about it and see what I have to do and what I am entitled too, BUT if I go down this road, you all have to SWEAR that if you start to think I am mooching off of the state you are to inform me instantly and tell me to stop. OK?? Deal??

Truthfully, I would love to do some cool conservation stuff and then tell children and young adults about how great it is, get them involved in it and show them how amazing the natural world is so that they preserve it for their children. I am a total nature geek, hence why I think I told MD once to not salt a slug under any circumstances or use slug pellets. I just love it, and I love it at work, as the nursery has pretty much got its own farm attached, taking the children to see the animals and woodlands and letting the explore all around them and ask questions and discover. I love it. But I cant walk long distances at the moment so have not been to the animals with the children in 2 weeks. :(. Do you think there is such a job or am I just dreaming ???

I totally sympathise as I am currently signed off work due to ongoing problems with my back. I am on SSP but it is very little and life is a struggle at the moment.

If you are working at a children's nursery then I would imagine that is not good for your back with all the bending and picking up and carrying?

Also, you are still young and if you don't get your back sorted now you will have continual problems with it, only getting worse as you get older. I don't want to be a scaremonger but having read some of your previous posts about how much pain you were in I really think you need to get this sorted as soon as possible.

Your GP can sign you off work and if your company can't or wont pay you you should still be able to get SSP. Don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion either, you shouldn't be having to pay for an MRI.

When you went to A&E didn't they refer you to the orthopeadic clinic? If you go back to your GP and explain he can arrange a referral to a specialist but it might take a while. Isn't your Father a doctor? He doesn't sound very sympathetic (cobblers children going barefoot!) but couldn't he pull some strings with you with some of his colleagues?

I really feel for you. I broke my back last year and was in hospital for some time and really really stuggled to pay for horses, house etc and I have a young child. I lost over 2 stone through depression while i was in hospital and couldn't wait to get back to riding. I looked after my back when I came out and done everything the docs told me and my back has repaired really well. Please take care off your back, your young and it's the last thing you need playing up. It may be a pain short term through lack off money etc but you have your whole life ahead off you.

Note to all children/ adults who have Doctors as Parents. THEY ARE VERY ANGRY HORRID PEOPLE WHO SHOUT AT ALL OPPORTUNITIES. grrr, My father is useless thinks I am being a big baby, says I have never acted like such a complete woos in my whole life, I cant be in that much pain as I am still going to work, why on earth would I need a MRI scan, I am under no circumstances to get signed off work and he thought he had brought me up to be tougher than that and live with a little pain.

Humph, well possibly I am just being a big baby. I mean I can still walk and I can still do some stuff, just lifting, twisting, driving, carrying, bending kneeling, high stepping over things all hurt my back. But I suppose its not making me feel sick, pain wise, only when I drive, so it probably isnt that bad.

I promise I'll give you a kick up the backside if you look like you're getting too comfy on the benefits couch :D Seriously tho, you have to think about the bigger picture here - look how many peeps are claiming that shouldn't be, and get away with it.... YOU need that money, altho I can tell you you may want to marry that rich landowner before you claim to soften the blow.. it really aint much.

How's you feeling now btw ? sm x

Where is he?? You need to introduce me now....rich landowner = i dont need a job and i can just play horsey all day and then have children, wooooo. :)

Yeah, feel ok i suppose. just confused what to do re Newquay this weekend. I know what I should do, but I dont want to do what I should do I want to go play with my friends.

b_b - when you speak to osteo tomorrow see if gentle swimming/floating would help - is a great rehab for lots of things as there is no impact on joints etc and the gentle resistance of the water helps loosen muscles.:)

Will defo ask, but will have to go out and by a wet suit. I dont do showing off my body. its got horrid scars down one leg and I dont like them.

b_b I really hope you can make use of your Zoology degree and conservation interests if that's what you want to do. Nursery nurse stuff is so different. Do you check out the Environment Jobs website - I know not many conservation or environmental jobs are well paid but they have some good opportunities on there sometimes though maybe not too local to you. Have you also thought about conservation/zoology and media...very hard to get into but research work sometimes crop up at places like the BBC Natural History Unit in Bristol - might not be the kind of translating/educating work you want to do as you may want to be more hands on in field work/research. Gone off piste a bit but do take care of your back so you can get fit again. Another thought that might tie up with your children/education/conservation interest is Forest Schools? Might bring those various interests of yours together in a way?

thanks MD :D. Reason to Nursery nursing, wanted some good experience with children of a variety of ages, which I have got from 18 months - 11 yrs (inc the holiday club) and I wanted a recognised qualification in it too hence the NVQ. Have tried all areas and am currently waiting to hear back from a few jobs that hit the nail on the head. Money wise i dont really care that much as long as it pays a bit more than I earn now and is more conservation based as I love that stuff so much. Thanks for help. TBH this is more useful to me than help re my back as I am just so cross now that it has floored my weekend away that talking about it makes me upset and I want to cry, so best to avoid subject completely really. :) :D :)

Unless someone works with children they have no idea! You cannot work with little ones with a bad back. You cant just stop and have a rest! They dont let you!

Nope and when they want to climb on your lap and give you a cuddle, how can you stop them. I do love my job as the children are incredible, but it doesnt help the healing process.
