YES, EXACTLY! Sorry to shout but you need to listen to this. YOU need it right now. YOU are entitled to it, guilt-free. Stop being a martyr and start looking after number 1, and that is an order, I mean, THAT IS AN ORDER, MISSY!
SSP is one of the uses for NI - you contribute NI, so you are entitled to use it when you need it - and deep down, this will be one of the reasons why you haven't taken out private insurance - because its effectively compulsory insurance against being unable to work, so you have EVERY RIGHT and EVERY NEED right now to be claiming it.
Look at it this way. Would you rather a) use SSP and whatever else you need in terms of DLA etc as much as you need it at present, and come off it soonish, or b) risk being seriously F'd up much longer and "being a burden" to the state for a much longer period of time because you didn't listen to your body right here and now.
