I rent a field that is 10 acres, which is long and thin. The current fencing is sheep wire with a single strand of barbed wire along the top. Unfortunately both my horses think that "the grass is greener" and have been leaning over the fence to eat. This has made the fence sit at an angle and also wrecks their rugs.

As I rent, I don't want to replace the fencing, so would the best solution be to attach connectors to the fence posts and run a line of electric just inside the fence? If so, what connectors would I use, and is it best with thin wire, rope, or tape?

Is there a guide online or anywhere with instructions on all the fittings needed for the start and end of the line etc?

One line of fencing runs along the road. THere is a path about the width of a large horse between a hedge and the fence (in the field) that my horses love to use; I was therefore thinking about on this stretch replacing the top wire with plain wire rather than the inner fence, as I'd worry they would touch it accidentally and panic in a narrow pathway. Would I need a second power source, or can the rope/tape on the long side be joined to the wire on the short side? Also as it is on the road, presumably I would need to put signs up warning about the electric fence?

Sorry for the questions! I could presumably come and get someone to do this for me, but that would no doubt cost mega bucks

Does everyone do their own fencing repairs etc? I'm beginning to think livery has it's plus points
