I've decided that I really do need to get both my two some new turnout rugs. My little Arab could do with a new no fill, plus a medium weight with a detachable neck cover. It would be great if this could take a liner for extra warmth when needed. My Welsh needs a lightweight (50g?). Can anyone recommend me any good deals or particular brands? I haven't bought a turnout rug in (gasp) about 10 years so I'm feeling very out of the loop! I know that the liner systems are all the rage now so I would be quite keen to go for something like that, but I don't know what. I know there was a really good deal recently on a Rambo bundle, but sadly they'd sold out of the sizes I need by the time I heard about it, and I really can't afford the price new. Are there any good Black Friday deals out there? I am terrible at shopping, so would love some HHO help!!

Eileen Douglas where the Rambo bundles were also have Rhino plus and vari layer rugs available on sale. The vari layer is a 250gm and the lite 100gm and they both take the liners. I’m a HW fan and both mine have Rhinos with liners, they don’t leak and cost a lot less than the Rambos.

Oh fab thanks guys!
Do you think it makes sense to try and just get a no fill and then use it with different liners, or get a no fill and then a separate medium weight that can be used with liners to make a warmer rug? Does that even make sense? I don't know enough about liner rugs to judge! She will have spares because she has her current rugs, they've just seen better days haha!

ETA the Welsh is much easier because he isn't rugged much.

I confess I'm a layerer (don't think that's a word) and I chop and change with the weather because my mare seems to need minute adjustments to her rugging. The other one is naked and furry, I don't worry about him! I like Swish because they are tough and fit well and are roomy enough for a liner but not too big or ill fitting without one.

My two have a no fill each and share the 100, 200 and 300gm liners as one is warmer than the other even when fully clipped. I love the fact the liners clip in and out easily and wash and dry overnight as one of my pet hates is dirty stinking greasy rugs.
Oh okay that's useful to know! So perhaps I aim for a no fill each and then an assortment of liners. I swear rugs never used to be this complicated!

I don't know that brand, I'll have a look.

I've always got on well with Weatherbeetas before but no idea what the quality is like nowadays. I've got an ancient middle weight that my mare has been wearing for 10 years and it's still going strong, and it fits her well too.

I can only comment on Horseware as that’s the only liners I have used. They are fab and if you can stretch the cash a bit they are really worth it. I have the 50g horseware bravo which came with all the liners. I also have a horseware rainsheet which doesn’t have the liner loops but it’s fine to had the 100g liner to if needed.
I’ve just bought the 100g HW from Eileen Douglas tack shop, it was a steal at £60.

I got an amigo 50g with detachable neck for my Welsh at a good price and it’s great. Fits him like a glove, doesn’t leak at all, nice and lightweight, dries quickly and has all the attachments for liners too. I have an 100g amigo liner that I use under all my various rugs and it’s very handy. I’m a horseware fan, they are the only brand that seems to get that a pony rug has to be scaled down for little legs rather than just a smaller size. I like the amigo bravo range, or a Rambo if I can get one!

Exactly this. Liners are so flexible, and wash so easily.

I have a Fal Cheltenham system, which is the bees knees, but sadly not made anymore :(

I got a used Rambo without liners, and bought liners seperately - pretty much any liner will work, The tail strap clips are more important than the neck tabs for keeping them in place.

For some reason I don’t like no-fill rugs. I think on their own they don’t keep horses any warmer, and actually sometimes make them colder as they can’t fluff up underneath. I would always have a minimum 50g and then add layers. I also really like swish rugs and got quite a few in their sale recently when mine needed upgrading. They’ve only had them on for a couple of months but they seem warm and haven’t been damaged yet. I like shires rugs but they seem to die quite quickly. Rambo and PE just seem too expensive for my wrecking machine horses.

I've mostly got trojan xtra rugs now as have 1200d outers. They are surviving the trash gang here.
Got given a liner rug and hate it. So fiddly to get the liners in and out, and a pest to get settled back into place after you've taken if off.
Much prefer layering.

I think it depends what you use them for, but for me they are absolutely essential on the 30 year old. I don't use them to keep her warm though - I use them on days where I know she should be warm enough without a rug, but it's going to be very wet or windy.
My gelding isn't a rug wrecker exactly, but he's pulled all the tail flaps off the mare's rugs, so I really don't want anything super expensive!

A decent 0g outer (I have Rambos) plus a variety of liners in different weights and you are all sorted.

The varilayer liners are good - the PPID + PSSM mare has one with a 250g top layer which covers her quarters and 100g on the sides under her 100g fill Rambo. She happily lives out all winter in that. She has hoods in a choice of weights too, 0g or 150g depending on the weather.

You can fine tune and tailor the linings under the turnout according to the weather that day.

My Arab's are in weatherbeeta and shires I buy detachable necks and I have liners for them, I have shires liners but the swish and Derby house liners fit all there rugs and they are cheaper than the Rambo ones and wash well and I think they are good quality, swish and Derby house do a 50g liner which is ideal for me as I tend to use my 50g turnouts quite a bit so it makes a nice 100g rug.

I don’t really use 0g now.
I find if I feel I need to rug very light it’s because it’s wet - in which case the 50g seem to do the job far better.

If it’s not really wet and I just want to keep the mild chill off in variable weather then I find they can overheat in a 0g if the sun comes out. I have both Amigo Aussie and Rambo summer for that job.

So I’d personally go best denier 50g you can afford, detachable neck and liners.

If you can afford it, there are cracking deals on the top of the range Weatherbeeta Comfitec Ultra Tough (1680D, 100g fill with loops for the additional liners). Detatchable neck with no leak cuff. Memory foam wither pad. Fit on the shoulders is second to none & I have a massive shouldered HW show cob.

£116 and worth every penny. Kicking myself I bough the Medium (220g) version as I like a different colour for each rug (nerd)

That is HALF price!

Weatherbeeta are good and I like amigo too. My poor horses have the bumblebee and racoon print! I shop on naylors and Gs equestrian, they accept payments via klarna and clearpay too so I've noticed.

Are they the same size? If so, I'd go for a lightweight each and a 100g rug then a 100g and a 200g liner. That way you have all bases covered and can make up to 200g in 2 rugs and 300g in one if you need to. I'm a fan of Premier Equine (especially for big/ wide horses as they're deep so over them up well) but I know others aren't due to the weight of them. They're not cheap but there's a really good group on Facebook for second hand ones and you can get lucky on there.

No they aren't, unfortunately. The littler one does sometimes wear the bigger ones rugs, but I can't do it the other way round.

My preference would be a no fill each, then liners, but all the Black Friday deals I can find are on 100g+ so I'm a bit undecided about the best option.

Swish are fantastic and you can buy all the liners to go in them, or just the individual rugs. You can also mix and match the thicknesses of the necks or remove the neck altogether. I love mine and the quality is really good.

I have Bucas and liners and weatherbeata and liners, but neither as a no fill. I have Shires ( Highlander, I thnk) no fill, but to be honest, I rarely use them. They did withstand a horrible afternoon recently though, I fully expected to find it had soaked through, but they were dry.

You can use liners in any rug. So long as they clip onto the back filet string D ring and fasten at the front they stay put.

I am going to get this for my mare, in 100g and then add liners. My gelding is going to get a Swish no fill that can have liners added. He's tricky because he has a very thick coat and the only reason he is getting any rugs at all is because they are moving to very exposed grazing. Atm he is unrugged all winter and lives out, so I don't want him to get too warm, but I think he will need some protection from the wind in particular.

I had this dilemma when I bought my pony last winter. I didn't have any rugs that fit her so started from scratch and after much consideration I bought Shires (as previous owner said it fit her well) and went with a 0g with detachable neck and a 50g standard neck, and then 100g and 200g liners. It didn't cost a fortune (all this considered!) and between them I have pretty much every option covered as I could use both liners together if it got super cold (she's fully clipped but quite a warm one)
