Upon spotting Ragwort, what do you do?

I pull and dispose of, sometimes sadly over the hedge. Luckily this year the field was sprayed and I haven't seen a sprig of ragwort in the field. Yipppeeeee!!!!! Can highly recommend spraying now!!!!

I mark the spot with whatever I can as you never find the stuff again if you leave it and then get my gloves and rag fork to dig it up with. I never leave it ever for another day because you never find them and it is not worth the risk. I have been known to have nothing on me in which to 'mark the spot' with so took my top off and used that whilst I scarpered over to the stable in my bra to get my fork and gloves !!!!!!

What a sight for the neighbours!!!
I strip graze my horse so check the area each time I move the fence.

Option 3.

I also went out and removed all the ragwort within sight of our field along the bridleway. Cairo came with me and ate the thistles - he also then carried the huge bundle back - wrapped with baling string and then slung over his saddle.

Some of the stuff was over 6' tall.

option 3. Mums pulled ragwort with bare hands for over 40 years and never had a problem, i will use gloves if i go looking for ragwort as i take them with me but if i just spot it when checking the fence line (we have a guy come up with a machine and poo pick so we dont have to do it) then i have no problems pulling it up without.

ours has never grown back either. it was horrific when we moved in, 2 years of extreme paranoia and checking the field at least every couple of days year round and never letting it get past the tiny rossette stage means that now when i check once a week, on a bad week i find one or two rosettes.

the odd plant I will pull with my bare hands, if I am going out on a mission to clear ragwort then I would wear gloves and take more precautions

Absolutely! I'd certainly take more precautions if I was volunteering to do a "ragwort pull" day around the lake locally, for example.

Also I know sheep can eat them without it being bad for them

[/ QUOTE ]

Not true. It is as bad for sheep as any other animal, it is just that sheep are usually slaughtered before they get any symptoms.

I either mark it with something and get gloves or ragfork, or, more usual, pull it there and then, maybe using a pulled-down sleeve pulled over my hand.

you are joking i hope
defra have strict guidlines of how to dispose of it

We get a couple of sprigs come up every year (in different places) and I always go back and get my gloves to pull it out. I think my liver gets enough bashing from the wine I drink, without inflicting any more toxins on it

sadly there are other ponies and cows over your hedge.
each plant can have 1000 seeds that can lie dormant for many years.can you not burn it?

There's no ponies and cows over my hedge! And as I said that was in the PAST! Field now sprayed so don't have a ragwort problem! Now that several of you have wrapped my knuckles for me putting what must consist of 10 sprigs of ragwort over the hege in the last 5 years I consider myself seriously chastised. After all, I could be one of those a**wholes who doesn't even pull it. Or I could be one of those who leaves it in my field to dry and spread a bit more. Come on folks. Get a grip! Did I say I was pulling ten acres of it and putting it over the hedge!

ha, wish i had the option of only finding one plant and not being able to find it again!
since im the only livery who actually gives a toss about ragwort at my yard, im generally down the field with a barrow and fork, trying to clear the stuff but cant keep on top of it. all the fields around here seem to be infested, so cant just move to better grazing, but it seems as soon as i think im getting somewhere theres more come up

Michelle73 - seeds can be carried by wind etc, I would strongly advise you to dispose of it more responsibly. The people who neighbour my field have had ragwort growing in their gardens before as the seeds have carried over the fencing.

WILL EVERYONE QUIT GOING ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT WAS IN THE PAST. YOU'VE ALL POINTED OUT HOW WRONG I AM AS THOUGH I'VE BEEN DOING 5OMILLION ACRES OVER THE HEDGE FOR THE LAST 50 YEARS. LET IT DROP NOW.

whoooooooo!sorry to offend.no need to shout.

TELL THE WHOLE WORLD WHERE I LIVE WHY DON'T YOU!!!!

JUST FOR THE RECORD, MY HORSES ARE NOT NEXT TO THE COLOURED AND THE BAY THERE IS SOME ACREAGE BETWEEN MINE AND THEM PLUS WE'RE GOOD FRIENDS, DO YOU SERIOUSLY THINK I'D BE PUTTING RAGWORT OVER INTO THEIR FIELD. COME ON!!!! THE COLOURED COBS ARE NOT IN THE NEXT FIELD TRY ONE MORE THAN THAT OVER. BESIDES, I'VE HELPED OUT WITH THEM IN THE PAST, SO WHY WOULD I WANT TO ENDANGER THEM???????????? I HAVEN'T ANY RAGWORT NOW AND NEVER HAVE HAD A BIG PROBLEM WITH RAGWORT IN MY FIELDS BECAUSE IT IS NORMALLY BAGGED AND DISPOSED OFF AWAY FROM THE LOCATION. PERHAPS YOU'D LIKE TO POP ROUND AND DISCUSS THIS FACE TO FACE, SEE THE SET UP FOR YOURSELF. AT THE END OF THE DAY, THE HORSES ARE NOW TEN TIMES BETTER OFF THAN THEY WERE BEFORE I CAME ALONG. IF YOU KNEW WHERE I'D PUT RAGWORT IN THE WHOLE OF THAT ACREAGE THEN YOU WOULDN'T BE STICKING YOUR BLOODY NOSE IN. THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS THREAD WAS TO DISCUSS WHAT YOU DO WITH THE ODD SPRIG OF RAGWORT NOT THE WHOLE ACREAGE . WHEN YOU'RE DISCUSSING MY FIELDS HAVE YOU ACTUALLY SEEN HOW MUCH RAGWORT IS GROWING IN THE SURROUNDING FIELDS THAT IS NOT PULLED??????????? PERHAPS YOU'D LIKE TO STICK YOUR NOSE IN WITH THEM INSTEAD???????????????????? OR TOO AFRAID OF THEIR OWNER???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'LL THANK YOU NOT TO DISCLOSE MY LOCATION OR ANY CLUES LEADING TO MY LOCATION ON THE INTERNET EVER AGAIN. IT IS HIGHLY DANGEROUS TO DO THAT. COMMON SENSE PLEASE.

ONCE AGAIN - I'VE PROBABLY DISPOSED OF AROUND 10 SPRIGS OF RAGWORT OVER THE HEDGE IN AROUND 5 YEARS. RAGWORT ON THE COMMON - OOOOH THATS ALL MY FAULT IS IT????????!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT THOUGHT ITS BLOWING OVER FROM THE HIGHLY CONTAMINATED FIELDS???????????? IN FUTURE MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS AND KEEP YOU NOSE OUT OF MY AFFAIRS. I'VE ALREADY SAID THAT YOU'VE CHASTISED ME, TOLD ME WHERE I'M GOING WRONG AND AS THE FIELDS HAVE BEEN SPRAYED I'LL NEVER NEED TO PULL RAGWORT AGAIN.

(no need to shout)
you have already told every body all about yourself, where you are,and the name of your horses and all of your arrangments.
i just think ragwort should be disposed of in the correct manner.
have just noticed you have removed your details.

I spend my whole life digging up bl**dy ragwort, and still the stuff grows. I use a tool like a hoe, that digs under the root to pull the whole thing up, clods of earth too.

I burn the stuff I dig up, so no chucking it over the hedge or anywhere else.

The chap who owns my lower fields says he's been pulling ragwort off his land for the last 20yrs! This doesn't fill me with any hope of ever making the stuff go away!

The problem with Ragwort is that once it has flowered and the seeds have matured that the seeds can remain dormant in the ground for many years before germinating and prodcing a plant. This is why the use of herbicide to kill the plants before the seeds mature is good practice. The dead plants should always be pulled up and burnt. It has an additional advantage in as much as the smell of the chemical on the plant will ensure that animals will not eat it even if it somehow does not get pulled up or gets in to hay.
