upper fixation of the patella? (clicky stifle)

Yep! my boy Lenny, he's now 18 months old,first time it happened end of August and happened once since,vet says excerise, but he is a Clyesdalexwelsh his mum is tiny so I think they used a young colt on her, bought him from a traveller family I know,so now I'm keeping an eagle eye on him, it doesn't distress him at all(just me) and they do grow out of it so I'm told.:):)
 
I've got a pony mare with it - she's 16 now. It developed before i had her, when she was boxrested as a yearling, and got worse when she had more box rest when she was 4. Exercise keeps it under control - the fitter she is the less it locks. She doesn't do as much now, but when she was younger it didn't stop her jumping 1m20+ and keeping up with bloodhounds. We did look at surgery, but decided the risks of later arthritis outweighed advantages.
 
Yes.. 5 1/2 year old cob. It started a few months ago after he'd been rested for two weeks as he had a cut in his leg. He's improved with lots of lunge work and more hacking out. It only happens occasionally now and only if he's going downhill. :)
 
My rising 6 -appy x has just started suffering with this .... Vet advised smart walking up hill for 3 months. As much movement as possible ie turn out as much as poss and move to bigger stable.

Advice on other management would be greatly appreciated

My Vet advised all the usual stuff that everyone else has mentioned, especially keeping the horse out as much as possible. Youngsters tend to grow out of it as they mature and get stronger and fitter.

I had a QH mare that would lock up after just 5 minutes in a stable, regardless of what size it was, trimming her feet was horrendous, we tried everything short of surgery (the quote was knocking on $5000) and the prognosis wasn't hopeful even then.

Her bad days got more and more frequent, to the extent that she would be dragging her fetlock on the ground, with winter coming up I had her put down about a month ago.
 
My mare has this intermitently - generally if turned out and in work then she doesn't lock. If out of work or kept in for more than a day or two then she can start catching.

Generally keep your horse as fit as possible, and turned out as much as possible.
 
My 3 1/2 yr old has this intermittently, I have been noticing it since last winter. He never seems bothered by it but I hate seeing it :( He was lightly backed in the summer & I had planned to give him the winter off (our fields are on clay so he has to be stabled overnight) but after it stuck badly the other night, as of yesterday he is back in work. It always seems worse once he's had a growth spurt & is bum high again, he also has a straight back leg which doesn't help.

As a side note does anyone else have any other techniques for unlocking them? Walking backwards doesn't work with my boy, he just drags his foot along the floor! Thanks!
 
yes my new 11 year old started locking a couple of week's ago. he is a bit out of condition with no muscle on back end. was horrible to see it. vet gave same advice as others. but actually it hasn't happened again since. just trying to ride as much as poss to build up muscle but hard in this weather.

At 3 1/2 he may well grow out of it as my mare was reasonably bad at this age and now is only very mild.
Definately keep him in work - straight lines and hill work to keep the muscles working without extra strain as circles are difficult.
Try getting him to turn when he does lock as this can work as well as the backing up
