Hi

I've recently bought a Dartie who has a known health history of 0 problems - came in a couple of days ago with running nose (thin, clear discharge) and scabby lumps on her face, paired with pretty swollen glands. Coughed when working too. Vet came out - did your basic run through and we have ruled out flu and had a negative test for strangles. Think it's an allergy so have the option to go on to ventipulmin next week if coughing worsens.

Fast forward 3 days later and the respiratory problems have reduced, but now we have the same scabs appearing around her heels and lower legs - some of which have broken open and have started to bleed...

I'm erring towards medicated shampoo to help the scabs as it might be some low-level yeast-like infection. Has anyone encountered this before? She's out in a herd with no other horses showing any symptoms of anything other than good summer health!

In herself she's as bright as ever, so not feeling ill with it at all.

Why don’t you bathe in medicated shampoo or a very very diluted hibiscrub (eg 15ml drop in a pint of water) and then dry and apply sudocrem? Have heard that works well x You could also try several piriton x

It could be part of the allergy. There could be something in the grass not agreeing with them and causing photosensitivity. It happens to my horse every year when they go to the spring/new paddocks. This year to head it off I muzzled him and clipped his legs to allow me to put on antibiotic/steroid creams. He was rugged in a 80% uv protection rug. It’s the best year he’s had so far! Currently he’s on a fairly bare paddock and doesn’t need the muzzle or rug unless it’s super sunny (what’s the sun like we’ve forgotten?)

vet said not to bother allergy testing. His symptoms are manageable now that we know the correlation between new grass paddock and sun. But it took a few years to figure this out cause the symptoms always went away when the grass was ate down a bit/rain came as it does in summer here.
