Well last week has been a real rollercoaster!!!

First my young mares mastitis flared up again, so my vet put her on antibiotics but she then got serious odema, all around her udder, between her hindlegs and all over her stomach up to her girth area, the poor thing was totally miserable. The vet had to come out again and put her on diurozone (sp) to reduce swelling and then left me with penstrep to inject her with every day. The odema went down but no sign of the infection going so she had a course of IV antibiotics which made her feel very sorry for her self but the udder was as big as ever. The vet then sent her into the vet hospital to get it scanned and to see if they could lance it. The scans thankfully showed that it was very probably not a tumor but a major solid infection which is quite deep rooted. They took some biopsys just to confirm it's not a tumor and to try and identify the pathogen causing the infection. They said it was so solid that they could hardly get the needles into take the biopsy so they weren't able to lance it. She's home again and is on very strong antibiotics while we wait for the biopsy results. She's feeling much better in her self though and they're also going to put her on sodium iodide to try and help soften the mass. They said it's highly unusual to see such a bad case of mastitis in a mare, especially as she hasn't had a foal before and is only 6.

The following day I was back in the vet hospital with my mare with the fractured hock and her foal to get her re x rayed. She'd been in 3 months box rest with a bandage and splint so I was hoping she might be able to start going out again. Good news is that it is healing

, bad news they want her on another 6 weeks box rest for it to heal completely and to reduce the risk of arthiritis

.The splint can come off though and I can reduce the bandage and she can go out to graze in hand. She's been so good and chilled while on box rest so I think she'll cope with a while longer.

Quick update on the 2 year old who had a lump on his gum which he vet said he'd only seen in elderly dogs

. I arranged to get a biopsy done to find out if it was malignant or not but a few days before the procedure he came in from the field and it was gone,

he must've knocked it off. There was no sign of where it had been except for a little cut, which is now gone so he couldn't get the biopsy and the vet said unless it reappears there's not much he can do

Hopefully it won't come back.

Finally a bit of good news,

my older boy is better after his lymphangitis (the fluid went into his feet so he was quite sore for a couple of weeks) and I took him showjumping at the weekend. He was a complete star, 2 foot perfect rounds in the 1m and then into the jumpoff where he was brilliant. We made all the turns I'd planned and he jumped out of his skin. We were in the lead for quite a while but then a fast little thoroughbred shaved a half second off our time so we had to settle for second but I didn't mind because he jumped amazing. He was so calm, controllable and confident, I think they could have been 1.30 and he still would have flown around. I'm going jumping again this weekend so hopefully he'll be as good as he was last week.

Whew well done for getting this far, sorry for the long spiel but it's been a hectic few weeks. I daren't think about the vet bills, maybe the vet hospital will give me a discount for being in twice in one week! Although it is a teaching hospital and as both cases are very unusual they said they'd give a teaching discount.
