Well it's been a real roller coaster ride this week with Widget being rushed in to surgery on MOnday and her coming home on Thursday afternoon, minus one pup and the others weren't brilliant. She had slightly opened a gap in her stitches, vet checked it, used Intrasite and told me to wash it in saline 3 times a day and refill with Intrasite which I had done and it was healing nicely although the pups were sticky from the Intrasite. This morning, went to wash her and she had a little fingernail sized piece of skin poking through gap; rang vets, took her straight down and by the time we had got there (it's less than 2 mile away) she had lots of flesh sliding through the gap. Had to have another op where they have opened her up, cut away all surplus and contaminated skin and zipped back up again; she'll be in there until Tuesday at least. Poor girl, she didn't ask for that and she had been so happy to be back home again, was looking very well considering a caesarian and a spaying.
The pups, looking back, have been a weak bunch from the start, so unlike her other litters and these have remained very lethargic, unable to suckle or keep them warm and they were failing fast. The drugs she was having haven't helped, they're not passed for pregnant or lactating bitches and also the toxins in her body before the op' would have been getting into them too; they haven't really had a fighting chance but there was one that stood out as a bit stronger than the others, still not brilliant but better. Last night, we had taken the decision to try him on Weasel; the others had been fading fast in spite of trying everything for them but she couldn't take more even if she would. Bless her, she accepted him into her brood and within a couple of hours he had improved a bit, was warm and had a properly full belly. Today, everything crossed he is still fighting and he deserves this chance; he's certainly fighting to get to a teat and have his share and Weasel has accepted him as her own, bless her.
Took these after tea, just look at the difference when you consider Widget is twice as big as Weasel and there are only a few hours between one litter and the single. I'm refusing to get my hopes up too much but at least he's getting a chance, he deserves that. If he survives, SN has named him already in an earlier post - Modget!

Oh I had no idea all these problems were going on. Poor little pup - lets hope he gets on okay. So I take it from this post that the others haven't survived?

Bang goes the new breed with the KC then.

That's right, this one is the last of Widget's; it's been a nasty week.

Well Weasel's were meant to be pure Bassets but you can see by the fawn colour that they're not; Monty has a lot to answer for!

Oh gosh P, really sorry to hear all this has been going on. Hope Widget is back on her feet soon. Extra rub for Weasle for taking Modget on, good girl.

Healing & growing vibes being sent.

Gosh Pat, sounds like you have really been having a time of it. Last post of yours I saw Widget was just whelping. I hope she picks up quickly and Modget thrives on his foster mum. There are always so many ups and downs with animals aren't there

Thanks MM! Modget is one of the gang now which is great and you should see his coat gleam; he's still half the size of the others but not shy of making sure he has a teat and when he's got one, he really hangs on to it!

W turned round before and he was still hanging on dangling, wasn't going to let go of his prize!
Had update from vet this morning and they're pleased with her, she just needs time to heal properly this time so must be kept dry and not move about too much so she's staying in there until Tuesday at least, seems the safest option seeing as we have steps here into the house plus you can never keep her out of the bushes for long! I'm dreading the bill!

Thanks for your thoughts.

Love the new pup BTW!
