Driver too fast. I gave him the finger. Stopped, got out and asked me what the problem is. I explained and he thought he was being courteous and apologised I apologised for swearing and we went on our way. Now I feel bad!
Ha ha that's funny!! Don't feel bad though, he obviously didnt realise he wasn't being as courteous as he could of been so next time he will be aware of it
Sounds like you resolved it well to me. We all do things in the heat of the moment and at least by having had a conversation and apologised you have probably made sure that he understood your concerns and won't take against horses on the road in the future.
I was once riding a horse out on the road for the first time and had a friend with me with her horse on his outside. A driver stopped and gave us a load of abuse for being two abreast (and it wasn't on a narrow road/blind corner or anything) and then jumped back in his car and drove off before we could say a word. Fifteen years on I am still cross that we didn't get to explain why we were two abreast!
Last weekend I was riding along the road to my yard which can be quite busy but cars are normally quite good.. Anyway we got caught in the rain then all of a sudden everyone was in a rush to get places!
So car coming up Maisies bum .. Maisie freaks because the car is so close so she decided to turn sideways and have a strop .. Car coming towards us on the otherwise of the road slows down so I can get Maisie over .. Que the car behind us revving it's engine goes round us was about half a foot from going into the car on the other side so I shouted and the driver on the other side gave him the finger lol!
Just anoys me because Maisie is so good out in traffic but when you get idiots coming up her bum and revving there engine of course she's going to play up!
The car on the other side then went past waving at me to make sure everything was okay! Nightmare lol
I was once on a hack with my sister and a friend, we were all single file and one driver decided to come so close that he was about 2 inches away from taking are legs off with his wing mirror! He was sworn at thoroughly! haha but he didn't get out or anything just continued to speed off...
Another time a lorry came up behind me quite quickly, my mare had to literally leap out of the way because he was that close! There wasn't anyone on the other side of the road either! Obviously another stuck up driver thinking they own the road, when horses were the original form of transport...
But at least all was resolved and there is one more driver more clued up than he was before out on those roads
Haha..this has happened to me a couple of times now..it hasn't ended so amicably sadly, with comments like 'ride your young horse somewhere else then'..... ummm we have to ride on this road to get anywhere else.
'Theres plenty of bridle paths to ride on'..... ummmm no there aren't!
Even had a woman stop right in front of me and friend on mad ex racer I was babysitting , on a country lane and tell us we should pull over for her, ( which we always do when we get to an appropriate place) I don't think you should feel bad, it's a naturl reaction when a car shoots past you.
I don't swear at drivers. They may not know how to correctly overtake, or they didn't see us til the last minute etc. If you swear at them what do you think they will do to the next Horse and Rider they pass?
All road users should be polite to eachother, I know this isn't always the case but it gives all riders a bad name and creates more problems then resolving them.
Mind you - I was travelling down one of the lanes locally when I came upon a horse and rider - well I drive a 4x4 that is plastered with horse awareness stickers so slowed right down and came to a halt so as not to startle the horse. She was moving onto one of the local fields that the farmer allows local riders to hack around so I thought I would wait until she was safely in the field - nice and courteous - do as you would be done by and all that.
Well I slowly moved past her and smiled, she said something I couldn't hear so I wound down my window - to receive a torrent of abuse about didn't I think she could control her horse and words to that effect. I calmly did my window up and drove away!!!
well i had nasty incident with a neighbour from a farm near our yard, who we dare not upset as hes tried to kill 2 people (very aggressive not right in the head on lots of meds) and he drives straight at us so we have to shift quick. but most people are quite considerate compared!
At last yard people were generally good... my friend had a good tactic for those passing too close though. She'd stick her stirrups out and leave a nice little scratch in their car... If you're passing within inches of a horse on a wide road... you probably deserved it.
I have to admit to being a road phobic though and am lucky we have miles of hacking without a road in sight!
I was riding down a main road near me (straight road, 40mph) which has one of those electric mph reader signs - a stagecoach bus came trundling up behind me, I was decked out to the nines with hi-viz, put his foot down and sped past me. Thankfully, my girl is pretty bombproof - the sign said he was doing 60mph.
I didn't get his reg, nor at the time did I consider reporting him - I was too happy that Gem hadn't spooked at the double decker bus doing 60mph past her!
Where I live,we have no option but to ride on the road,& over the years have had so many near misses, caused by speeding drivers-not our horses. I taped up a dressage whip with florsesent tape,& as I hear a car approach,I stick the whip out to the side. It works a treat as they can see the stick & don't want to get their car scratched
Me and a friend were out riding once on the roads. A woman pulled over and told us to ride on the path because horses aren't allowed on the road. Told her to take some time to study her highway code
I tend to just practice lateral work in the road if I have a car up my backside. The average driver just see's a horse that could continue into their car so they stay back. Best i've had was an old dear, over took nice & slow, we thanked her & she stopped, got out & started abusing us for not picking up our horse poo from a bridlepath & her dog had rolled in it. Tried to explain but gave up when she then tried to tell us it was illegal to ride horses on roads.
Had a few problems the one I look back at most is with my old horse brand new Audi he clipped my stirrup I was riding my 16:3 warm blood he got out and started shouting at which point eachen bared his teeth and lunged he got back in and drove off
A few years ago on a busy road, very straight and good visibility, a tanker driver slowed right down and did absolutely the right thing. The pensioner behind him decided to overtake him not understanding why he slowed way down, thank God my horse was very responsive to the leg and was willing to jump up onto a high(ish) verge!!
The tanker driver was desperate to give the pensioner a hard time but because I was there he could'nt!!
