Upset Tummy

Little Bichon (6 months old), has had an upset tummy for a couple of days. My fault for feeding something I shouldn't.

She seems bright enough in herself, and is eating well (boiled rice and chicken). But at what point do I get concerned and whisk her off to the vet?
 
If she's bright in herself and drinking plenty of water I wouldn't worry too much. Try giving her the chicken and rice in tiny amounts every couple of hours rather than one or two larger meals. It won't load her tummy and give things time to calm down. Presume its just runny bum, if she is vomiting too then maybe worth getting her checked over by vet.
 
Did you starve her at all when the runny bum first occurred? I find starving for 24 hours and making sure she is drinking water, then moving onto chicken and rice in small amounts helps to clear runny bums quicker :)
 
You can get the doggy version of protexin my friend gives it to her little dog, it's tummy is very delicate ,

You can get something from the vet called Canigest for upset tummies, it comes in a syringe like a wormer and you just give them a small amount according to their size. Glad to hear she's recovering now.

This is hands down the best advice for any dog that gets any kind of tummy upset IMO.

The only exception to me is a dog bringing up stomach bile as that is usually because the stomach has been empty for too long according to my vet.
 
No, I didn't starve her because she's only 7 months old so wasn't sure if it was a good idea or not - but have been feeding the chicken and rice.

Her poos did get better, but this morning were very runny again. Poor little love. She's ok in herself, but phoned vet for advice and they want to see her.

I don't think the heat is helping. And I'm a bit concerned now.

They'll want to see any puppy under 12 months old that hasn't resolved an upset tummy in 24 hours. It won't hurt them to fast for 24 hours, very often the system needs the rest and then gently bringing back with boiled rice and chicken as you've given. Speak to your vet, but when our pups (now 6) both got upset tummy's at 6 months, we luckily already had them booked in for that day to register at new vets which included a health check...they said, "fast for 24 hours and if they haven't improved this time tomorrow, bring them back".

We were lucky, they were fine the next day, but it is always better to be safe than sorry and pups can go downhill quickly. That said, the chicken and rice won't be too much for her. Try not to be too concerned, it's quite normal for pups to get like this sometimes. Just keep an eye on how she is in herself and how much water she is drinking and passing. If you notice any changes before Monday, call the vet back, but otherwise, I'm sure it'll just be a precautionary visit.

Sorry to hear she's still poorly. I would definitely starve for 24 hours then small amount of chicken and rice. Make sure she's drinking lots of water and not vomiting.

Wise to book the vets Monday if she's no better but in the meantime give it a go.

Up until he was 18 months my BT used to get an upset tummy quite often, we used to starve and then give him boiled rice and yoghurt. Make sure she is getting plenty of fluids as it is very hot and I hope she starts to feel better soon.

I think as they get old their digestive systems just get more and more used to different bacteria, bugs and erm animal poop! :D
 
Poor little pup. When I first had my latest dog he ate everything he could spot when out walking (long dead rat, toadstools, squashed frogs and other disgusting things :O ) So he had a lot of tummy problems, luckily he's grown out of that. But I boiled chicken pieces or carcase and gave it to him when cold as I thought it was maybe better than plain water. Let's hope pup is better v.soon but probably a good idea to take him to the vets anyway. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Maisie, you gave the water from the boiled carcass?
 
Yes, simmered it for 30/40 mins. then let it cool down, it's probably a bit more nutritious than plain water I thought. Good luck, glad she's feeling perkier.
 
I'm often concerned my little chihuahua is not drinking enough, especially in this hot weather so I always boil chicken bits and keep the water in the fridge. She will drink that anytime its offered.

She is fed raw meat but I avoid beef, seems to give her the squits for a day or two.
Hopefully your little BF has nothing more than an angry tummy. Hope all's well again very soon.
