I've brought my four year old mare back into work over the past four (ish) weeks. I've just ridden her today and burst into tears when I got off... she's getting increasingly stronger, starts charging everywhere when trotting and a lot of the time will not accept the contact and goes around rushing and looking like a giraffe.

I'm hoping to get a lesson this weekend and then I'll know what to do more to help her (hopefully!)

Feeling massively s**t right now and really don't know what to do... maybe we just don't get on? Maybe I always forget she's only four?

Sorry for ranting :(

Hi, Sorry i cant give much advice other than to say I have had and do have bad/awful days with our 4 year old. I'm no expert other than i have learnt to accept that there will be problems and issues and sometimes it seems your never going anywhere or even backwards....then i sit back take a breath and get on with it using common sense- taking a step back if need be and keeping the situation calm.
If i think of the improvement in our horse i can see what i'm doing is working he's turning into a fab little youngster who has off days but I'm proud of him!
Chill out- he's a baby and its not easy- I'm sure if you look at the whole picture it will appear much better, Lessons are brilliant idea and will do amazing things for your confidence in return building his.

Well done for the good bits and hugs for the bad...you will get there x

Tiny steps hun- tiny steps. It will happen.

Some of our steps have been so tiny they have been barely noticeable - but when I look back over the last 10 months he is a different horse.

Was looking at some old pics on the pooter last night- the highland resembled a giraffe aged 4/5 too- he suddenly went right aged 6. I had forgotten what a git he was.....

Don't despair....as someone on here told me- its so much more rewarding when you make them yourself.

Have a (large) glass of wine- a deep bubble bath and remember... we do this for fun:)

Just a thought, are her teeth ok?

A friend has been having problems with her horse accepting the bit and being a git, also young and his teeth are changing.

Lesson is the way forward, yes indeed. It ALWAYS helps to have an extra pair of eyes/an extra brain/some added confidence. Whereabouts in Shropshire are you? Have you found an instructor with experience of youngsters that you like?

She had her teeth done a couple of months ago Janah, so I don't think they would be a problem yet.

I've calmed down a bit now, I just need to take things slowly with her and not forget she's still a baby! And of course not be such a crying wimp!

Thank you McNally and poppymoo!
