Does anyone know what the parameters for urea levels in a horses blood sample are? And how high would qualify as a raised level? My vet isn't particularly forthcoming with information. Look forward to hearing from anyone who can help.

I am not sure, could you google it?

High urea could be a sign of kidney dysfunction, could be caused by something the horse has eaten. Full blown kidney failure in horses is rare which is good news.

My horse has a kidney dysfunction and I keep him on a low protein and salt diet and off lush grass.

I think it would be worth explaining your concerns and worries to your vet and ask him/her to explain exactly what this indicates etc. Dont be shy, its what they are there for.

Thankyou for your post. I've tried googling it but the information is quite complicated and I can't seem to find any straightforward figures. I have tried to clarify with my vet, and I am persisting, but he too is like the internet...complicated and not straightforward!! How did you find out about your horse having a kidney problem?

I am sorry, I wasnt much help!

My horse had a blood test as he was off colour and he had high kidney enzymes. He had a urine test as well and I suspect it was because he was having too much protein for his type and I restricted his protein intake.

I will have a look on the internet and see what I can find.
