I have only a week and a bit left until camp is there any last minute training and fitness techniques. He's still got a bit of fitness that i need to boost into him
Thank you
There are no short cuts to getting a horse fit. Just carry on with your current fitness plan and when you get to camp you may need to miss out some of the riding if he's not fit enough. Sorry that's probably not what you were hoping to hear!
I don't know what you're doing, but training in intervals is good for getting both humans and animals more fit, e.g. on Wikipedia described as: "involves a series of low- to high-intensity exercise workouts interspersed with rest or relief periods. The high-intensity periods are typically at or close to anaerobic exercise, while the recovery periods may involve either complete rest or activity of lower intensity." I've seen a clip on the sport news about the Swedish showjumping team doing it with their horses, as I recall it, they for example had like five or six medium high jumps on a row, that they jumped a few times and then they just walked for a while, before jumping the jumps a few times more, or doing some other more intensive training for a while, before slowing down again etc.
Hypothetically, if you're out hacking, you can do a version of interval training, by changing tempo perhaps every fifth to fifteen minutes, and then I'm not talking about changing between a slow walk to a slow trot, it should be between a slow walk to a really fast trot or between a slow walk to a canter/gallop.
I hope you and your horse can enjoy the camp as much as possible, but other than the advise above, I can only ditto Sugar_and_Spice, there is no short cuts to getting anyone fit, be it horse or human.
Thank You yes i know - however he is fit enough i just wanted to make sure he was ready as has come along alot in about 7 weeks - Thank you for your honest opinion though
Thank you helped a lot - he is ready i tell you i rode last night and he decided we wanted to trot and then gallop didnt want to stop after about 2 hours of fast pace trot, fast walk and cantering
