I currently look after 2 horses at their owner's livery yard. I do Mon-Wed am's (yard has a turnout rota) and Wed-Sun pm's and get £10 per day. I do all mucking out, poo picking, hay, water etc.

YO has just phoned to say a lady in the village is thinking of moving their kids pony to the yard and would I be interested in looking after it for more ££. She's happy for me to suggest an amount and I'd guess the owner would pay the extra in with the livery.

But how much??? I was thinking £25 p/w otherwise I'm not sure it would be worth my while. Does that sound reasonable (this is a weathly area

Is it every day you will be looking after it and would it fit in with the above routine or would you have to make additional trips. Our freeelance groom won't come out for less than £10...works out at about £5 per horse for a muckout and turnout (or bring in depending) rug changes, feet and feed.

What exactly will you be doing/how often? Is that 7 days a week or just when you do the other 2, and will you be doing the same thing for them as you currently do for the others?

If same days/times as the other 2 I'd say your rate is £5 per animal per session, just cos they are ponies doesn't mean to say they're any less work than a horse, OK smaller poos so less volume but just as many (if not more) in number, less hay but you still have to get it for them, less water but you still have to fill the bucket.

Thanks everyone I'll probably say £30 per week so slightly less than the current two each and see what she says.

The pony should fit into my current routine (though will confirm this when I speak to her), I go up everyday but because of the yard turnout rota I only have to do 1 trip most days (but still do everything in that trip) This may differ slightly in winter as I have a full time job as well so I may suggest we re-evaluate the situation come Oct.

I'd say £5 per day per equine as that's what the others are paying and that way it keeps it fair for everyone. I pay £5/day for full livery duties and I think that's a bargain!
