I havent replied for a few days as he has had a very stable weekend.
The vet came on Thursday and we walked him out to see if he was steady enough on his feet to move and he was still very ataxic when in a new environment ie outside so the desicion was made to leave us with enough medication for the weekend and to reasses Monday.
Over the weekend he has been much the same and has learnt to cope very well in his stable and would move around well. I have even managed to syringe his oral meds in without him falling over when lifting his head. He was getting a bit cute with not eating them in a small feed no matter what we tried.
This morning came and the vets arrived and examined him and when we lifted his head he did have a slight roll to his eyes (I found out the term for this is Nystagmus - lesson of the day ) We then took him out of the stable and walked him around on the flat and was still much of the same if not slightly improved so the desicion was made to move him when we could arrange transport.
After speaking with the vets and Andy at Liphook they all came to the conclusion that they were happy with moving him in a normal trailer or 3.5t box with low ramp. Unfortunately this ruled out most of the liveries on our yard as they all have 7.5t or above lorries and the only person with a trailer was not happy to have the responsibility of moving him which is completely understandable. (If i had transport i dont think i would have moved him either)
So we managed to find a professional transporter who picked Zeus up at 6.30 this evening to take him.
So i assume that they will settle him in tonight and get cracking on x rays and any tests either tomorrow or maybe even Wednesday depending how he is.
Fingers crossed we can get a diagnosis and hopefully a full recovery but i think at the moment a cause of the symptoms would be a good place to start.
Excelkent news, hopefully now theyll be able to alleviate his symptoms and make him a happy boy! My horse is at Liphook at the moment and has been for a week now, they are fantastic and will take excellent care of him. Best of luck Zeus.
Mystery lameness! She's had a bone scan last week and then has had an MRI today which I should get the results of tomorrow. Hopefully she'll be able to come home tomorrow, I have missed her lots! They have been excellent, lots of phone calls and updates.
Glad to hear he is showing some signs of improvement, even if they are only minor signs. Fingers crossed that Liphook will have some answers for you soon. Please keep us posted
I hope you get to the bottom of the lameness. They are such a worry.
I couldnt go with my friend and Zeus tonight as i said i would take her son home with me and mine but i have already had the nurse on the phone asking all sorts of questions. It was a good job i can remember drug names lol!
Poor little man doesn't like me very much at the moment as i have been the one stabbing him in the bum with nasty needles and squirting medicine down his throat.
I have even had her vet on the phone to me letting me know what is all happening with him. I think she may even give liphook my number so they can explain what is happening with him so i can explain to her as well (she speaks english well but gets a bit frazzled with the technical side of vet speak)
Zeus had a comfortable night last night and I have spoken to my friend to find out what is happening with him.
He has been x ray'd and scoped today and they have found that he has a really rare condition where he has extra bone growth at the base of his skull.
This is putting pressure on the veins and nerves in the area which is causing the neuro signs.
Andy has been in discussions with a colleague all day and has said that they have 2 options which they will discuss further tomorrow but they are that they can either treat it medically (not quite sure how my friend didn't really understand) or they can operate.
The problem with the surgery is that there haven't been many operations like this. I think over a handful in the states and a couple in the UK. The type of surgery is also very expensive although im not sure on exact price.
They are going to discuss the little mans case again tomorrow and will let her know.
She asked about chances of recovery and he was quite positive that the outcome would be good. There is a 50% chance that he would always have a head tilt but he may well recover enough to be ridden again.
So some very positive news today. Fingers crossed it keeps coming after their discussions tomorrow. :-D
Fantastic to get such a quick diagnosis after he was admitted-it at least relieves 'some' of the worry:-/ Good luck with the treatment-fingers crossed he has a speedy, positive outcome
Gosh, yes, caught up with this last night - good luck.
His syptoms were exactly like a horse we saw suffer what should have been catastrophic brain injury. Steroids sorted this out but horse will no longer be ridden due to it being injury induced. I wish the little fellow well.
Good luck - everything is crossed for you, your friend and poor Zeus - I have got quite teary reading his story and will be rooting for him every step step of the way xxx.
My friend was told that he may not stand on his own for a few days and would be in a sling but the brave soldier got up and is standing on his own feet with no support :-D
Lets hope the next few days continue to go in the right direction :-D
