Urgent- Best insurance company?

Can you pm me too - as I have a horse who has been at the vets for 8 weeks so far and we are insured with Petplan!

OP how old is your pony? This would influence who I was going to insure with. Fwiw I'm with NFU and have had my mare insured with them since she was 2 - she's now 15 and will be in her last year of cover because they will only fully cover her to 16. I have recently had to claim for the first time for a fairly large and ongoing vet bill and they have been great but for every company there will be people who have had positive and negative experiences. Insurance companies are, at the end of the day still existing because they make money and there is lots of small print that will often make claiming difficult if not impossible particularly with an older or very young animal. The only issue I have had was many years ago claiming for death and trying to prove the value of a horse is difficult!

As for recommendations, it's probably also worth asking your vets because they will have experience of most companies at least from a vet bill perspective :)

Don't forget that the insurance companies now ask for full details of other claims and the veterinary history of the horse too :)

He's 12 but we do plan on keeping him for a long time so this may be a bit of a pain. We have to vet coming soon so may speak to him then. The problem is they know they have to pay as there is no way they could get out of it so now they are just being a pain.

Yeah don't worry, I'm sure it'll be fine in the end!

The reason I asked about age is because I actually think the Petplan offers one of the veteran packages particularly if you've been insured with them since the pony was younger. It is definitely something I would take into account because I am going to be a bit stuck with mine next year! It's quite likely that other companies also offer this now but I haven't looked into it for ages so when you are looking look out for what age the policy changes and what is then included - mine will only be covered for external injury atm. It is a bit of a minefield really and worth spending a lot of time comparing the small print in the different policies, then when you think you have decided post again for experiences of the company you have chosen :)

I'm with Petplan and have to say that they have been excellent so far. Hadn't had my latest horse long when she needed (on going) vet treatment. They have paid up promptly with each form sent in, no hassle at all.
Not long til policy is due for renewal though, exclusions may not leave much of the horse insured.:D

Im with KBIS and cant fault them - they paid out in under a week when my lad had his hock problems last year - £900 claim. And they were incredibly helpful when my bank screwed up my direct debits and they didnt get paid one month.

Im with NFU or I have been (currently horseless but hopefully not for long). I had a claim last summer with them it took a few months to settle but they settled no problem and I'll go with them again with my next horse.

Kokopelli - I hope its not serious, you've not had the horse long.

I am another insured with NFU, i changed over from SEIB many years ago, one month after i changed, but before any actual direct debit payments came out of my bank, i lost my horse. They paid up within one month.
My second claim was for the death of another of my horses, she died suddenly and PM was done for insurance and again, they paid up with no quibble.

We have the farm and everything else insured with them, they arent the cheapest around by a long shot but i would rather insure with them for a good service than go for cheapness and problems.

Hope you get your insurance sorted out.

NFU will give normal cover up until the year of your renewal that your horse is 17 (my horse died at 17, so i'm 100% sure). Then you can still have full cover at an increased price until they are 20, then after that they will only cover accident.
