URGENT; Colic in the older pony

Urgent advice please.

Without too much detail, 40 + pony is found rolling/ looking at belly/ getting up/down etc.

Becomes exhausted and lies down.

Gets a full whack of painkillers etc.

Calms down and becomes dopey and atleast relaxed and notin any obvious pain.

Vet says that he will give painkillers, but when they wear off believe she should be PTS.

This is in a few hours.

I personally agree with him and see no light at the end of this very long tunnel, my mother is clinging on to the hope of fighting for her.

We have another hour or two to decide before painkillers wear off.

Vet believes her body is shutting down.

Please advise.
 
my friend went through the same thing with her elderly pony a few months ago. No meds helped to end the colic symptoms and he ended up getting PTS rather than leaving him to suffer anymore.
If when the pain meds wear off and the pony isn't showing any signs of improvement i'd go with the vets decision.

Having been in this situation but with my 15year old. I think that you are right. Once the pain killers have started to wear off you'll be able to see if she is any better or not. My personnal view would be if she is starting to shut down to do whats is fair now while she is stil comfortable and not in pain (and better memories for you than if she is uncomfortable at the end)

However no one can tell your mother this if its not what she want to do, you all have to be comfortable with the descion and the end of the day.

The only other thing you could try is trying to get some fluid into her thats got electralites in to replace some of them she will have lost through the colic.

I went through this earlier this summer with my girl. We gave her all the chances we could and gave her through the night but she just got worse. I had her pts in the end very peaceful and i couldnt watch her like that...
Do what you can and ask your vet mine was very honest with me and as hard as it was i knew it was the right decision for my girl..

How awful. I went through the same with my old 25yr old pony Simon. The meds wore off and it was horrific. He got cast between the stable door and had to be PTS wedged there and this is the last vision i had of my best friend of 19 years

You will know as soon as they start to wear off what to do but your mother must make the decision herself. She probably knows the right thing to do but is clinging onto to every last hope ( as we all would do )

After training as a vet nuse and having seen how distressing this is for both horse and owners, i would advise to always follows the vets advise. At least if you PTS while she is pain free you have a nice last memory!!!! My thoughts are with you all (((((HUGS))))))
 
Sending loads of vibes and hugs. If the vet feels pts is the best thing for her then I think you have to follow his advice. At least you will know her end is peaceful, rather than worrying about her having another attack when no-one is about. It is always a horrible decision and my thoughts are with you and your Mum. x
 
Oh no, I understand the terrible distress you and your mum are going through right now. I have lost two of my oldies this way, one was 43 and the other 41 who had lead very healthy lives up until severe colic suggested that their digestive system was failing. The vets did all they could on the day and, after pain killers, muscle relaxants etc, the vets monitored heart rate and concluded that they were not responding. This is the time to let go. However, if your pony improves and becomes her normal self then it may well be a one off, just to be monitored each day.

This happened to me 2 weeks ago with my 36 yr old.Vet went to car to get painkillers when he came back he said she was dieing. She was PTS there and then. She had never been ill and it was so sudden.Vet said it sometimes happens this way and something is drastically going wrong inside. My thoughts are with you.
 
I am so sorry about your pony but having been there myself with my mare I can only echo what everyone else has said about having her pts whilst she is still comfortable. Big hugs for you and your Mum.
 
no advice honey other than do as you always have done and put the horses welfare first, I know you will do the right thing however hard it is to want them to stay. massive hugs (((())))

Willie was PTS because after he had a stroke his body started to shut down, although he wasn't in pain just old and done.
For me it made a chose that I'd been trying to make for months easy (as easy as it could of been) there wasn't any other thing to do for him.

You and your mum no her better than anyone and know whats right for her no matter how much it hurts both of you.
