Do you remember my last thread called "what could be wrong with my friends Horse" well it turned out Horse had a bad reaction to her yearly vaccs. It caused her chest to swell so she appeared lame and very lethergic. She was put on box rest, bute and anti biotics. Few days passed and Horse no better so vet back out, Horse has a Abbcess on her chest, which is still yet to burst! more bute and different anti bitoics and turnout, that was on Monday. Chest has gone down, apart from the lump where the abbcess is.

Early hours this morning, Horse gone down with severe colic, thrashing around, has broken both her water buckets and damadged a brick wall, so she must have been down a while. Her eyes and face have swollen up too. Vet is there now and has tubed her. She has had some bowel movement since, but still not out of the woods yet. Vet is hanging around just in case.

We don't know what caused the colic yet, could be the pain of the abbcess, the new anti biotics, or the new field (shes gone into the little sick paddock at the front so people could keep an eye on her)

She is only 7YO :( and a lovely kind sweet natured mare, really hope she pulls through!

Vet has just left, there are now some gut sounds and Horse seems much more alert. She isn't allowed to eat anything until this evening when she can have a bran mash. Friend is worried that when the pain killers wear off Horse will colic again. So everyone is keeping a close eye on her for now.

Thanks for the vibes.

Thanks for all the vibes. I just hope she will not colic again later on once the meds have worn off. Is it common for Horses to react to vaccs?

Everything crossed for a speedy recovery!

Ive heard of quite a few reactions to vaccination, my horse had one himself although not as bad as above, for that reason I will only vaccinate if needed for livery/competition. I really don't like them and I know quite a few people that feel the same!

Oh thats interesting. Was it his first jabs? shes always been fine before  she goes out competing a lot.

So sorry to read about your friends horse having a reaction to vaccination ,and hope she quickly recovers ,all reactions should be reported by your vet to the VETERINARY MEDICAL DIRECTORATE, I have asked why so many horses have reactions and they could not tell me , but they did say they are aware there is a problem , if you type in on net ,REACTION TO TET AND FLU VACCINE IN HORSES you will see others . Also ask your vet to report the reaction to the drug company as they some times pay for treatment ,they did for my friends horse who spent over 3 weeks in a equine hospital.

Went back down after work yesterday and friend was walking the mare around as she still hadn't done any poo's. I took over to give my friend a break and literally had to drag Horse around. She just didn't want to move. Vet was called but she advised to give her the bran mash feed and soacked hay and call again if Horse refused to eat or showed any signs of colicing (poor vet was dealing with her own Horse which was colicking!)

Horse ate her bran mash and her hay and owner went up late last night to check. Yo did the early morning check and I did the mid morning check. Horse has done about 5 poos overnight and is a lot brighter today. I turned her out into the sick paddock and she was dragging me  there isn't really any grass in there so she is on soaked hay for now.

Fingers crossed she continues to feel better.

Good news :)

Re the orignal thing about the vaccinations - my mare suffers very badly, even in the chest. She now gets a second antidote injection (which is basically bute and something else) to help her. Still gets fluid collecting in her chest. One year she was very bad.
