Hi everyone,
Really need some help re mare hormones.

My mare is tempermental at the best of times, and she has been on magic which has helped, but she was a star all last week and now, she is unridable, basically dont touch me, go away!! You can only ride if you dont touch her mouth or with your legs, basically stay away!!

Put it down to hormones now, as she has swung so much from good to bad, and nothing else has changed. She has also had back teeth etc done recently.
On very little food and is not over weight but decent grazing which is monitored and hay.

Basically i need advice on hormone suplements as i would like to do some dressage, and when shes good, shes easily an elementary pony, but when shes bad, well you cant even ride her.
At my wits end with it, and so upset!!!

I heard regumate is good, but at £100+ a month i cant afford that!! I heard that store bought ones are extremely hit and miss and dont really do alot?....

Anyone have any advice?

Thank you !!

Regumate is supposed to be good for mares with strong hormones. Otherwise its a bit of trying different ones available in tack shops to see what works.

But also as she is suddenly so bad, it could be her back is sore. The overies sit behind the saddle and often mares with strong hormones get very tight and sensative there - hence her unwillingness to work. I would try a physio or chiroprator to see if that's the issue and if he can be loosened off.

I've used Naf Oestress which is specifically for mare hormones. I think Magic is more of a general calmer.

Agnus Castus works for my mare - not as bad as yours, but it definatly makes her happier andbis pretty cheap to buy from natural horse supplies

I would get her ovaries checked out and make sure she has not got any tumors. Also discuss having a marble put in her rather than the regumate.

I went throught all these checks with my daughters hormonal mare a few years ago. Turned out she was pre-cushings so now on prascend (pergolide) and the agression and tenderness is way better.

It is worth working you way through the supplements before getting to Regumate though - I have seen some work wonders on some mares and do nothing for others so the owners had to play around to find something that worked. If you do go down the regumate route, I wonder if you can still buy the porcine version? its a lot cheaper (basically the same product), but as I havent had to buy it for a long time this might have changed. I have had the very best of mares (still have her) but the last one was such an outright old bag I never wanted to have one again.

I had my mare on Moody Mare, its £12.99 from Countrywide and lasts about 6 weeks x She was totally different after being on it for 4 weeks...she used to fly over the stable door to take a chunk out of anyones arm/face etc, spin to attack when saddling up, hate being brushed etc but was an angel to ride.....

now she's been on Moody Mare for about 8months, shes loving, easy to tack up, will only put hers ears back if someone canters in a warm up too close to her....don't think thats hormonal though!

Once a year, she has a weekend when she says 'No, no, no!!' she'll jump 1m 20' jumps happily then decide she's not playing anymore and won't jump a 1ft 6 crosspole and goes all spooky!! this is only when she's in season badly, which is only once a year and happened 2weeks ago! x I don't think any supplement will fix her once a year strop though...its just her! x

I'd definately recommend Moody Mare but i've never tried anything else. I'd imagine they all have different effects on different horses but its cheap compared to the results i got! x I'd pay £30 for it if i had to! x

Hi I have heard that Moody mare is good. I have just started my mare on Oestress but too soon to see. There is another thread that is on her re marbling a mare. I am not sure that I am going to be able to help this mare without the vet getting involved with a long term solution. It is misery for her and she seems a nice sort when she isnt trying to break your bones

Personally, I would go straight for the regumate as if it is hormone related, then it's highly likely it will make a difference. If her behaviour doesn't improve, then it is likely to be another cause.

If the regumate does work, you know what the problem is, and you can then dabble with some of the cheaper alternatives afterwards.
