URGENT HELP needed please any ideas :(

Ruth 83 thank you some great ideas and tips there :) thanks
my lad has reacted badly to BB in the past but excepts sudocream ok so must be a happy level for him.
What I find interesting is people are saying in by night, I'm up the yard 6am and 5pm and have my lad in by day at the mo. This is best on my times?

Just wanted to check, you said you use an itchless supplement by NAF but did you mean D-Itch? If so it has garlic in which increases immune system reactions and is a big no-no for sweet itchers. I completely feel for you - I have a sweet-itcher myself who has gone from mild to medium over the last few years. He always has a good itch and it gets to the point that i don't take his rug off ever unless I've flysprayed my stable to hell and beyond and then its only for a second. I use Premier Equines sweet itch rug which I like, also to avoid yours damaging anymore rugs then keep him turned out and use electric fencing so he can't itch on any fences/walls and fence off trees. Its a pain but if he wants to itch he can still roll on the floor without ruining his rug. Big hugs for you and your itchy one xx

Finkley alex yes it's d itch, I wasn't thinking stright this morning when I was writing the post after seeing my lad and really couldn't remember the name. I know about garlic but didn't know d itch had garlic in. Best to stop this? Based on the garlic? Just don't know what to do for the best

Have you tried Skratch by Global Herbs- they also do a Skratch Plus and a syrup. It's expensive but my Welsh cob who I have on full loan itches much less when I use it although he only has mild sweet itch.
Before I used the skratch I put a liquid on his tail called stop itch or kill itch (can't remember which) and that helped.

plait a couple of cattle fly tags into his mane, and if you go to the camping shop you can buy a little zapper which runs on watch batteries and emits a tone which keeps midges at bay. you can sew this onto his fly rug. good luck its horrible to watch them so itchy.

Because midges are worst at dusk and dawn - dawn can be 3am in misummer (believe me I get up at that time a lot for work) and dusk can be 10pm, so horses out at night, however late you put them out or early they come in will experience the worst of the midges... We tried it both ways with the two sweet itch ponies, and in at night was by far the worst. You have to remember that even if they are not itching their hair out doesn't mean they're not suffering - especially if you've taken all the things to itch on away or electric fenced the field...

Ok will stick to " in by day" tbh he seemed so much happier once I brought him in earlier. I really don't like the thought off being so itchy but u can't itch yourself it must be so bloody awful for them.

Amandap thanks for that, just read it and for that price it has to be worth a go. Isn't it just like brewers yeast if it's B vits? And it's so cheap? Gotta be worth a try for any pony who suffers for that price

I tried everything with my pony, i mean everything, in the end i found snuggy hoods to be good as gives maximum head and neck coverage and he couldnt get it off.
Also gold ointment from the sweet itch society and also deet which they sell, its brillint but it can burn if put on sensative parts so you need to be carefull, i just wiped it on the hairs carefully and on his mane and tail, i only used it when the midges were quite bad.
The sweet itch society are very helpfull so well worth giving them a call.

This is supossed to be good, hav ent tried it yet because have managed to keep on top of things, but would definatly give it a go if needed.
Good luck i know how heart breaking it can be, i also considered putting mine to sleep, it used to break my heart seeing him rub and bite himself till he bled.

No garlic

Feed brewers yeast, you can get it at Holland and Barrett, 10 tabs a day.

No sugars.

Wash scaly skin with head and shoulders.

Use Avon skin so soft to put a layer of slippery grease on the. Oat which stops the flies from landing.

Keep pony away from trees, hedges, long grass and any water/ponds.

Try and keep pony in the windiest field or think about moving to a windier yard.

I agree, stable at night.

Nettex do some nice sweet itch products.

I would def look into some of the alternative therapies. Sometimes kinesiology works or acupuncture. Or try an animal healer. Have a look for a local practitioner.

Or, as a long shot, you could see if a communicator could help.

Best of luck.

I was told that Frontline works, not while he is still sore obviously, but when he is healed, kills the midges when the land!! Spray on the horse or maybe even on the rug!

Kill itch by carr day and martin. Brilliant expensive at first but just brilliant.

but this is benzyl benzoate which the OPs horse will not tolerate. OP, I re the global herbs recommendation I don't think it is easy to find their ingredients so I would want to know that it didn't contain garlic either.

I do accept the concept and I understand that midges are very chatty little guys!:D

So do you have to communicate with them individually or do they do group sessions :D

Could take a long time to ask a whole field full not to bite the horse

Ester yes I don't really like the fact I don't know what's in global herbs but than iv been feeding NAF d itch which iv been told contains garlic so iv stopped this.

The new rug lasted the night :) and people who live on site went up a few times over night just to check he was ok and seemed
happy grazing. Iv sudocream him up again this morning but his tail is weeping so bad, will this just sort itself in time?

Rockysmum and dolce to the naughty step now or behave ;)

I wish I could talk to the midges, wouldn't care what people thought off me, if it worked I would give each one a little kiss as well.

Ladyinred I actually down loaded the camrosa order form yeserday so am going to be ordering a starter pack. So you had good results from it?

My nutritionist advised agsainst global herbs products (a feed ago now tho) as they couldn't even spell the ingredients correctly and the product wasn't great ( she did sum independent test on several brands, also advised against naf vits and mins).

Just thought I would add my penny's worth. My experience has been that the only thing which works in a bad attack is a steroid injection and tablets from my vet. Tried Cavalesse with not much result, also the injections which are meant to boost the horses immunity again didn't work. Coopers fly spray applied every couple of days does seem to work though. Next on my list are the injections from the sweetitch society but the lady there told me they only work in about 50% of cases.
Re: rugs - bought a Snuggy hoods sweetitch rug which lasted two days because they aren't very robust, despite how much they cost and the boett is much stronger. Also be careful with the snuggy hoods hood as it slipped around my horse's face causing her to panic and run through a hedge! The Rambo hoody is brilliant, more robust but covers less.
The only answer seems to be keep horse stabled as little as possible, in a field with electric fencing so there is nothing for them to rub against, wear a rug 24 x 7 and lots of lotions and potions (trial and error which one works for your horse). Hope that helps.

Thanks carterk3 any info is useful, my boett lasted no time at all. I'm hoping the hoody with the boett belly piece and boett hood will work well. I feel so sorry for sweetitch horses I really do. Im finding in by day seems to make my lad happier and he actually goes to sleep. But iv got a dark corner box for him and don't seem to be any midges around there at all

Caerterk3 you mention the steroid injection and tablets from your vet. I already do the steroid injection on my horse but I am wondering what the tablets are that you also get from your vet? And do you just have a one of injection in the spring or more than that through the summer months?
