1st of all - my youngster has had the vet numerous times this last week for this - so this is not one of those post that people put up without getting a vet.

Quick story is that my rising 2 year old was down in field shelter mom pm. HR was 26, temp so low wouldnt register on any thermometer! 2 vets came to her, we built straw walls around her, she was on a drip etc and had about 25 rugs on her. Amazingly, she got up! from the ordeal, she has however lost all her weight and muscle.
Vet came back following day, said not to worry re weight/muscle will come back in a few weeks. Unsound on hindend but youngster still shattered from mon pm so said would come back next week unless needed again.
Thursday, down in stable, vet came out (one of the 2 from monday), didnt want to try and get her up, prepared us for worse and making the decision. Rushed bloods to lab and thankfully they did them within a few hours for us.
bloods showed inflammation in a major organ and raised liver function. RBC, PCV, Total proteins and everything else ok - white blood cells were in the normal range but on the low end.
Struggled for hours but got her up just before vet was back with results.
Vet suggested poisioning or poss liver fluke. Was given 5 days of penicilin (last day today) and also some Fasinex 5% for liver fluke and it was left as being my choice if i gave it her or not.
Googled and gave it her at 11pm.
just to add - she is happily eating food, readigrass and picking at haylage, once up ahe is happy to go for a strole outside her box etc.
16 hours after the fasinex, she was down but this time, sweating, trying to get up. We got her up and she tried a lot more and it was much easier than previously so yay - thought we were going in the right direction.
last night, others offered to do the night checks as i havent slept really since monday pm. At 1am i had a call to say she was down and to get there asap. again, slight sweating and she had been trying to get up fab - but 3 of us couldnt support her enough to get her up easily so it took us over an hour (kept letting her have a rest etc).

SOOOOOO - we have liver damage - this would be low protein diet etc however, she has lost sooo much muscle, we need to build some of that up and quickly! (most of the supplements i have looked up are v high protein) - does anyone have any suggestions????

I dont want to give up on her but as we alll get more and more tired, our backs have all gone and its getting more and more disheartening.

i would love to hear if anyone else has had similar - and if you have known a sucess story - can you suggest some feed/supplement to her with the muscle/weakness as i think we are over the initial bad stage, but recovery is grately being hindered by the weakness!
We have a nice little hill just by her stable that we are gently walking her up and down in her own time as shes wondering picking at the grass.

i would really appreciate any help, support or suggestions as there are too many supplements out there!

Given the severity of the issue, I would be guided by your vet for her recovery. Personally I would stick with a forage only diet, with some gut support and maybe a vit & mineral supplement, and run everything you're planning on feeding her past the vet. The muscle will come back if she's over the worst, but trying to put too much on too quick would be a mistake imo. She's had it rough by the sounds of things; take it easy :).

there is 2 vets who have seen her. One is a fighter esp considering her age. The other gives up rather easily IYKWIM? one said her haylage will get it back on her in a few weeks the other hasnt commented as he is suprised she is still with us.
The problem is that i cant get her up alone, i need a few other people and that is where she needs to get a bit more on asap as for instance in the night, i could only get 2 other people up to help me (one being my retired, over 60 mum) and we REALLY struggled, even with the hoist, if she could just get that tiny bit more strength on her backend, her recovery i believe would be much smoother, quicker and more likely to happen.

I agree with this, she is still likely to be vulnerable and although she may look awful the weight will come back on once she is healthy, milkthistle is good for liver support and should be safe to use. A good probiotic such as protexin may be helpful so that she can utilise what she gets more effectively, they do a quick fix paste which I used recently with good results.
I hope she continues to do well and you can get some much needed rest.
