Hi, I'm having major issues loading daughter's horse which have been getting progressively worse and I had to give up tonight which is something I never thought I would do and would never advise but it has happened
I have ruled out pain as best as I can (I know we can't ever completely rile it out because they cannot talk bt I have spent a lot of time getting this horse in top condition and he used to load fine when (in hindsight) he had been in pain).
Desperate to get out for an eventing season as daughter has had a terrible time and trying to bring some happiness to her life.
She is booked into lots of comps and I would love her to get there.
I have contacted both Michael Peace and Joe Midgeley (spelling?) But neither have got back to me. Michael Peace was contacted quite a while ago, Joe more recently.
Is there anyone else that people know will be in Scotladn and available preferably in the next week?

Joe is back in Scotland (Kinross) 20-21 July. He sometimes does one off trailer loading sessions but I believe the preference is for people to sign up for at least 1 day of thr clinic. I'm not sure if there are currently spaces but they keep a wait list. It's organised by a private group on fb so I don't feel comfortable sharing their details. If Kinross is a suitable location send me a PM and I'll pass on contact details to you.

Sorry, wrong part of the country but I know our local guru (Matt from HorseHelp UK) occasionally does trips up to Scotland so might be worth asking him when he's next planning a trip.

Unless the OP is en route to Kinross, this might not be a possibility. I mean, if she could get the horse in the trailer to get to a clinic.....would this thread even exist?

There's a chap who sometimes comes to our yard called Guido Leidelmayer who does this sort of work as well. I have not worked with him myself, but he's made a huge difference for one of my fellow liveries. He's based in Lincolnshire but he comes up to Scotland once a month and stravaigs about to different yards, so you don't need to transport yourself/your horse anywhere.

Sorry you are having these issues, does the horse load better into a lorry? If it’s a trailer I mean? Could you borrow a friends and try and see if it’s the vehicle which is the issue? Has he had a bad time travelling recently?

I hope you get it sorted, honestly one of the most frustrating things! My daughter’s old pony was so variable it was hard to go out we never knew what he would do each time or how long it would take!

Steve Young is in Wales but does travel around the country. It might be worth contacting him on the off chance he will be in Scotland.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious, hadn't thought of that at all 🙄 I clearly posted that he sometimes does one off loading help and the preference would be to attend his clinic [after he's helped with loading and to cement groundwork training]. I'm not prepared to give away OPs location but we have it in hand.

A problem for every solution as usual.

TPO has messaged me and has been very helpful.
A friend has actually mentioned Guido as well so have just messaged him to see if he will be up soon, thank you 😊

I am not sure regarding the lorry as I don't have access to one. He used to load fine in the trailer, I have borrowed a friend's trailer last night but couldn't get him into it either. I'm not aware of him having a bad experience, it is only ever me that tows him, he travels fine, is calm although gets impatient if we stop moving. Unloads calmly and ties up at trailer calmly too.
I am trying to think when he started being funny with loading and if it coincided with me getting a new car but can't remember, plus I have had a different vehicle the last few weeks and his loading has still been awful.
I am using the same trailer I always had when he loaded fine too. I do really want to get him into the different trailer just to see if once he has a journey in the different trailer if he is fine then I will know its my trailer.

Have you had the breaks and suspension checked on the trailer recently in case the ride has been getting gradually worse?
I was just about to say the same, we had a trailer with sticky breaks and it gave ours a bad ride which is where I think his loading issues started x

Could you feel the brakes were sticky when you were towing it at all?
I have a full service booked in and will make sure that brake check is part of that (assuming it is but will make sure to mention it)

I've had one where the brakes were binding a little on a left turn which made the trailer judder. It just seems a little unusual if the horse was previously OK and has been getting progressively worse and you know there hasn't been a travelling incident.

And tyre pressure. After having our trailer back from being serviced, one of mine who had travelled brilliantly for years went very strange loading and travelling (would hurl himself to the floor) and we worked out theyd overinflated the tyres!

Oh interesting thanks, will double check the tyre pressures!

Another thought is to check out Richard Maxwell's videos, you can buy them to watch.

I think he is brilliant and I bought and used these a few years ago for one of my horses who was getting progressively more tricky to load. She now loads perfectly. I also helped my friend learn the same technique with her OTT horse, he also loads perfectly now.

RMaxwells videos are eye watering expensive but the ground work is very well explained, so I have to admit worth it, probably even if you have additional help.
The most important thing is you have to commit quite a lot of time to training and regaining your horses trust and for most horses it is an on going process.
If you go that route please feel free to PM me questions of how it all worked for me and my horse. Another HHO who had had loading issues did that for me and their little titbits were invaluable.

As well as getting the trailer serviced, would also recommend taking a short ride in it and eliminating any rattles you can. In mine the sides were blowing and the jockey door rattled. Both easily solved but wouldn’t have been picked up in a service.
