URGENT QUESTION REGARDING IN FOAL MARE

I have just found out that the stable next to Hannah's (my other horse Grace's actually) is being done tomorrow... The wall was kicked through by the horse who was next to her and the YO has decided to take the partition out and redo it tomorrow. Grace is going in another livery's stable while it is happening.

My problem is Hannah has only been going out for a few hours as she gets bored on her own in the field and starts pacing by the gate or standing shouting at me. I am at work all day tomorrow, so I cannot be there at all except for first thing in the morning.

My dilema is: can lots of banging and sawing upset an in foal mare who is ready to drop? Would it be better me leaving her out all day in the field rather than her staying in if it could unsettle her?

I think it could definitely upset her, as when they are close to foaling everyone seems to say that they need peace and quiet. I know its not ideal, but would be inclined to turn her out rather than have her upset by a lot of banging, The ideal would be if YO would delay repairs for a week or so!

I agree, if she gets upset she can release a hormone that will delay her foaling (not that it matters, except for you waiting!). This is the thing with mares, they can delay the foaling if they feel insecure, which is why late night visits should be discreet. I think I would want it delayed.
 
If she was mine i would leave her where she is used to being.
But i dont think mine would worry about the banging going on next door.
I think it would be worse and more stressful for her to be pacing about in the field all day.
Hopefully it wont take them too long to fix.
But if she is out stressing she is stuck out all day then.
 
My husband said he can keep going up to check on her... She does not get too worked up about banging, but there is going to be a lot of breaking wood, sawing through metal and drilling going on. Normally it would not bother her that much but she is becoming quite alert to noises and new sounds at the moment (a bit jumpy).

She is in a field with a lot of grass (it's hers for the summer) and has been going in it for a few weeks now. I just thought that if I could turn her out in there and someone keep an eye on her she might not realise that something is going on.
 
Could she not go out for a few hours as normal (hopefully whilst the work is carried out) then get someone to bring her in for you, if you are at work? I will help out if required!
 
With a bit of luck if you put her out when they start they might have finnished by the time she is ready to come in.
If they havnt then at least she will be reasonably settled having been out.
Fingers crossed it works out ok.

Thanks Sallyf... the problem is, I think it is going to be quite a long job (most of the day) because of the speed the man works at

But my husband has said he will bring her in as soon as it is finished which could be anytime between 12pm and 4pm I guess. I think the YO is hoping for it to be half a day of a job but I have my reservations.
 
Claire, I think I am inclined to agree with you... I just cannot believe I have not bloody thought about this sooner! I found out it was being done mid week last week, and I have been so busy tryign to sort out what would happen to Grace as there is no way she can stay in that stable with the wall coming down, that I just didn't think about Hannah

She probably won't give a hoot in reality. You're just feeling very emotional about it.

Thanks AmyMay, my nerves are shot at the moment, I just don't think I can cope with this being added on. I just cannot believe she has decided to do it now of all the times
 
When we had our first foal 3 yrs ago, she was a maiden mare and got huge before it was born. The yard was being done up at the time, diggers, sandblasters, drilling etc it was mayhem. All the horses took it in there stride, including our mare. I think I would take your cue from her, leave her out unless she gets distressed and maybe your other half could just spend some time with her tomorrow afternoon. I think it very much depends on her nature.
I feel for you ,its an awfully stressful time, but it will be worth it very soon!!!
 
Thanks a lot... normally she is not bothered by things like this, and I wouldn't normally be worried. But she seems quite jumpy with strange noises (in the field and in her stable) which I think is all hormonal.
 
Get hubby to take over some beer and do a deal with the lads - they finish by three it is theirs.

Otherwise I would leave her in the field.
