Hello all,

I am in the process of selling my rice trailer, I put it on ebay and within one hour it got bought. The buyer did not ask me any questions just bought it. She then rang me immediately and said she would pay £100 deposit to secure it till next week (I said I didnt mind if she didnt pick it up for a week.. when I notice some ebay sellers do no allow this!). Since she paid the deposit she has asked for the serial number (which was not in my original add). I found two plates on the trailer, which are located on the a frame by the hitching point, and send the pictures through to her. She apparently spoke to a service company which said that there was no way that the serial number was on the a frame and it would be located "on the left hand side of the left hand panel". I immediately did some googling and found a lot of websites (including suffolk police) which state that it would be on the a frame.
With all this she just emailed me saying that if i could not find the serial number she would not be able to buy the trailer and would want her deposit back as "she would not be able to insure the trailer which is a legal requirement" as well as "not being able to service it as they need the serial number"

so my questions are as follows:

1) would the serial number be on the a frame ? I would load a picture but I cant work out how to do it on this

2) is it a legal requirement to have it insured?

3) do you have to have the serial number to be serviced?

4) If you bought an item of ebay could you then turn around and say no to buying it? All the information I provided in the original post was correct and she did not ask any questions before hand

5) If this sale falls through she is entitled to her deposit even though all the information on my advert was correct and she did commit to buying it on ebay?

If anyone could reply I would be so grateful, I am very worried I am doing something wrong!

How can an insurer check that the serial number is genuine as rice are out of business so no records exist

How does a home made trailer get insured as they do not have serial numbers ?

sounds like a load of tosh re the insruance

Not goin to yard until wed as working but yes it is a small plate with weights on and serial number it does state that's what it is too. It is a 5number code if I remember correctly.

Pretty sure the serial no. on my Beaufort is on the A frame, will check in the morning.
No, it's not a legal requirement to have a trailer insured.
The insurance company will ask for the serial no., yes.
No, you don't need to have the serial no. to have a trailer serviced (as ROG has pointed out, Rice are no longer trading so who would the garage servicing it check with?)
In theory at least, once an eBay buyer has committed to buy the item they have to complete the payment but not sure how you'd force this. I'd be holding on to the deposit and deducting any eBay and/or PayPal fees incurred. You need to speak to eBay.

Can't help you with your trailer other than to agree with the replies above, however with regard to ebay they will find in the buyers favour 99% of the time.
She will just say the item is not as described and claim her money back via paypal!
If I were you I'd just cancel the sale and relist it and block her as a bidder!!

I would let it run, let Ebay sort it out, sounds as though she has changed her mind, buying something like this without viewing has to be strange.
The danger is that Paypal will refund her, so remove the money and any cards that they could use to take money from you. This assumes you want to keep the money!
Ebay and Paypal are not the same.

Paypal as a deposit is fairly safe.
I can't read teh serial number on my ancient rice trailer but I have never insured it as two years insurance would be more than buying a new traile & having owned it 7 years I'm well ahead.

Sounds like buyers remorse or she is confusing her brands, or both.

The thing about insurance and service is utter rubbish.

However, a buyer can drop an ebay purchase for any reason or none. The worst that can happen is one negative feedback. If she doesn't buy, cancel the transaction so that you only pay the listing fee, not a % of final value.

My ancient rice trailer doesn't have a serial number as the plate with all the info on it has worn off. Can still get it insured though, I haven't bothered for the past few years as it was just a waste of money really as id not get much cash back if it was pinched

Don't rely on Ebay or PayPal to find in your favour, I've lost money that way on bogus bidders. Don't reveal where the trailer is stored, just in case. Return the deposit and relist the trailer, it will sell easily and you don't want this hassle.
