Urgent - something wrong with my cat

[ QUOTE ]
looks Like we posted simultaneously!

Can I suggest you query not being able to raise the emergency vet when you are at the surgery.

Tbh, I would be looking at changing vets if this happened to me.

Hope all goes well at the vets

A cat with cystitis is not an emergency so wind your flippin neck in mrs.!

The vets were not sure if my cat would live or die.

Personally I consider that to be an emergency.

A cat does not die from cystitus - what it can do is die from liver failure, which is a complication of the illness - which is usually a result of a cat owner not spotting the signs eary enough and acting up on it. Which is perhaps what happened in your case.

The condition itself is certainly not a life threatening one.

Sounds like classic cystitis to me, get her to the vet today. It's easily cleared up but is extremely painful(IME!

) and can travel to the kidneys so it's failry urgent she gets seen.

Does no-one actually read the thread before jumping in?
Vikki-Crystal - glad the vet visit went ok....pilling a cat is one of life's great challenges, just slightly easier than nailing jelly to the ceiling.

AmyMay, sorry you're very wrong. A cat with cystitis (male cat) can die in hours. When my cat gets it, he is taken to vets at any time of day or night. The seriousness of the condition should never be underestimated.

As I originally mentioned, the cat fell ill was staying in a cattery.
He was obviously taken straight to a vet once he was in his normal environment and seen to be acting oddly.

Glad you have your cat sorted

why have they kept her in? surely they injected some antibiotics and then you will give by mouth i would never leave in food because 9 times out of ten they will not eat it and it will be wasted. Wrap in a towel put on her back and open mouth, if you cant manage that wrap in towel and but in batween legs and tip head back.:) good luck. Ive never heard of a cat dying of cystitis could have another problem.

I never feed dry food since a neutered tom that I had years ago got cystitis and nearly died as the then vet misdiagnosed. I was told then that dried cat food caused this in susceptible cats

It isnt the dry food, wet food can also cause an issue, its the proces the food goes through.

Glad your kittys ok didnt see this post until today.

Feeding pills to cats mmh !!
Is there any food she adores above oll others?

1) Hide in some sardines she wont smell over sardines
2) Tuna fish
3) rollup in a smidge of ham and then if all else fails this worked with my sick cat....

Take some very small pieces of cheese really teeny roll between your fingers like plasticine and then hide tablet in middle rolling between fingers so it stays safely covered.
Make a few Dummies with no tablet in them and then offer Dummy1 , Tabletted cheese and then Dummy2.

Doesnt work if they dont love cheese and maybe cheese might not be good for them but when you have a poorly cat the medicine is more important.

You can use a syringe pill dispenser but my old cat would clamp her mouth shut pretending she had swallowed and then spt it across the room.

On the other hand you might have the sort f cat who believes the vet when he tells you the pills are platable to cats.

Sorry for typos still only got one contact in!!

You can also buy a pill popper from the vets, these are part of my essential kit, especially when I have cats in who love nothing more than to slice my fingers, arms, face and bite any part of me they possibly can

Smudge cat is now home!

She doesnt have tablets (thank god!) as there is a newish injection for it so she had that instead.

She was kept in because last time she had an injection she wound herself up so much she started salivating loads - she looked like she had rabies! and got really upset so they just kept her for a couple of hours to keep an eye on her.

Thanks for your posts - luckily i have avoided trying to get pills into her!

My cat has had terrible cystitis, so bad it gives the the squits too
frown.gif

She has cost me over £1000 in vets fees.

Nothing worked for more than a couple of weeks and finally she had her bladder flushed out (there were clots adhered to the bladder wall) and she hasn't had it since, it's nine months now and she has wet food (wouldn't eat the special diet though), lots of water and is on a low dose of anti-depressents (given by a pill popper) as her cysitis was caused by a new cat moving into the area.

My cat used to try to wee anywhere cool on her butt (including on the bed)and was constantly washing and very, very unconfortable.

Take your cat to the vets as soon as possible.

Glad your cat's OK now - pity you had to be told over and over again to see the vet when you'd already been!

To get tablets down a cat, I crush them up and mix them with a small amount of butter or something greasy and smear it over a small area of the cat's fur in a readily accessible place. I've never known a cat yet that will stand grease on its fur, however foul it tastes!

I checked this out with my vet, because I know some tablets have to be taken whole, and she said what a good idea it was for most tablets.

Glad to hear Puss is ok. Sounds like you caught it in good time. As it happens - had a male cat with FLUTD in our emergency clinic last night. Thankfully avoided penile amputation but was very difficult to catheterise. He was very painful when admitted around 6pm but thankfully after catheter placement (under GA) and overnight fluids and ABs he was very very bright by 5 am and spent the morning playing with his catheter/fluid line! Was also a very expensive night for the owner might I add - 700+ euro and he was sent back to his local vets this morning for catheter removal and will require weeks of ABs.
AmyMay- It can indeed be fatal - 24 hrs before seeing the vet (if there is a blockage) is a long time and worsens the prognosis. Usually far worse in male cats than female. Cat's urinary infections are like no other species.

if it was a male cat and not passing any urine then yes, it would be an emergency, but a female cat squatting and passing small amounts of urine little and often is not a dire emergency and the OP did right by getting cat to vet the next morning. cystitis is very common and actually in cats is almost always idiopathic and not infectious and doesn't need antibiotics, although most of us prescribe them anyway just in case they get a secondary infection. anti-inflammatories are the best thing. dry food is bad for cystitis prone cats as it reduces their fluid intake. hope this might clear up some of the misconceptions and false info in this post!
