I know this is about dogs and vets but this is the busiest forum so:

my GSD has epilepsy and has 90mg Phenobarb in the morning and again in the evening.

Stupidly this evening he has had two doses - ie 180mg (mix up with OH thinking I hadn't given him his meds, and then me not knowing that OH had done so already). Will he be ok? This was about 2.5 hours ago and he seems fine at the moment. I am hoping that at worst he will be more sleepy.

Advice please - thanks

200mgs to 500mgs is the average dose for a human.
2g to 5g is the average lethal dose for adults.
I don't know if this will help???

It would be ridiculous to take advice on this from anyone on the internet - call the vet and put your mind at rest.

Thanks everyone for your replies - you were right of course that I should ring the vet. I rang the night emergency vet who said he should be ok and that the overdose was minimal. He said we should just keep an eye on him overnight to make sure he did not go into a coma although this was very unlikely on this dose.

So he was fine all night - we didn't really notice any change in him from normal.

We are now back to the original agreement that I give his medication unless I specifically ask OH to do it, and if he thinks he will do it then he must check with me first. This system has worked since last Feb so I don't know why it had to break down yesterday.

Anyway, thanks once again.
