Knew there was a reason why I should have listed in Maths at School- how do you calculate how many lbs of haylage a horse should be having per day? Not especially scientific more a rough guide? ;)

weigh horse - number in kg = x.
go to google and type in (assuing horse is correct weight) "what is 2.5% of x, answer = y
times y by 2.2 = amount in lbs your horse needs per day. (not including grass eaten in the field)

the 2.5% should include any grass eaten in the field otherwise they are likely to gain weight.

assuming 20% dry matter in grass, horse eats 1kg per hour roughly, so 200g per hour towards overall 2.5% bodyweight a day.

if 500kg horse out for 10 hours, would be 10kgx20% = 2kg. Daily allowance of 2.5% of 500kg is 12.5 kg so forage / hard feed would be 12.5kg minus the 2kg of grass 10.5kg, then convert that to lbs.
