hi all Again, colt still has pin worm but they are coming out of him in packs he was just pooing 1 out each poo i have put the wormer up the bum as vet said he did a poo 10 mins after with loads of worms a week later today i was poo picking field and he does a poo so i went over to investigate and there was around 30 wriggling pinworms all different sizes he is also developing sloppy poos i no every1 keeps saying use 5day panicure but i has had 2 wormers in the space of 6 weeks the last wormer was don on 30th dec via mounth and it was equest pramox he had the whole syringe when he should of had 300 he had the 500 dose vets said he cant have anything else till its all out his system in 16weeks time so she suggest worming him up the bum but it hasnt worked also he sweats up on his chest and under armpits when he poos should this be a concern??????? could the worms he is pooing out mean the wormer is working even though there are wriggling??????

Yes is the short answer the wormer works on several levels, expulsion, ie. ridding the gut of live worms, killing of encysted worms - these are often termed as the 'dangerous' worms as these are the larvae stage burrowed in the gut wall waiting to mature and emerge and they can prove a real problem if there are lots of then emerging at once. Only certain wormers actually kill the encysted worms and Equest is one of them. The wormer will continue to work for several weeks expelling worms at the various stages. I wouldn't panic. Personally I would get a wormcount done in 16 weeks time.

so would i need to be concerned regarding him sweating up when he does a poo if wormer is still working why are the worms alive when they are coming out

You only wormed him last a few days ago and it takes a while for the wormer to work, that's why to re-count they usually do it at least 10 days after you've wormed.

With regard to sweating - is there any chance he was doing this before? Or that he's stressing himself and its not just a result of the wormer. If you are concerned, then go back to your vet - its what you are paying them for. Plus with the dosage this quick only the vet can confirm whether its advisable or not.

As I said in my previous post, we've had huge problems with these little blighters and most vets don't really know a solution, hence why mine consulted with both Liphook and Rossdales.

If he is purely sweating when poo'ing then this is something you need to get the vet out to as a priority.

And just because he's had it up his bum it doesn't mean to say it hasn't been absorbed, it goes into the bloodstream and doesn't actually work by touching the worms.

not sure if he was doing it b4 as i had no need to be so visualent with him when he pooed today and al the worms came out still wriggling he seemed realy adgitated (so if spelt wrong) and wouldnt stand still my first thought were maybe the worms inside are wriggling and irritating him he seems fine in him self eating drinking sleeping running round following me round the field tipping my barrow over he does have a thick coat comared to his field buddy so that could explain it. as you can see (if i have managed to attach pics he seems bright enough im probably just looking for things as im frightened to death hes going to get sick with these pinworms

We had to treat pinworm last summer. Vet prescribed 3 x strongid p taken at 10 day intervals ie 1 strongid p wait ten days next one and so on... and also prescribed a topical ivermectin solution to apply around the back end to kill any eggs. Vet said the only wormer likely to kill pinworm was strongid p at this dosage level. Apparently there is no wormer on the market that treats pinworm but strongid p has shown the best results. In any event, pinworm has now cleared up and pony ok.

how often did you have to put stuff on your ponys bum as vet gave me some of that said apply once a week i always thought should be done evry day

My friend had a nightmare with her old girl getting rid of pinworm. Andy Durham at Liphook saw her several times. She had ivermectin - which didn't touch them, Moxidectin - which didn't touch them, then she had an ivermectin injection - which also didn't work. Injectable invermectin is not licensed for horses as it is used in cows but he thought it worth a go!

In the end she had three 5 day of Panacur Guard treatments at 4 week intervals. This finally cleared them.

Liphook now recommends using Strongid P to get rid of them.

There is absolutely no point in worm counting FOR PINWORM. The only thing you can do is apply a length of sticky tape to the anus and then look for eggs under the microscope.

The thing that was unusual about my friends mare was that she didn't show any signs of itching at all. I've hear it said time and time again that horses with pinworm will be itchy and will scratch their bottoms but I really wish people would listen that not all horses do.

my colt is the same he shows no sighns of the pin worm no itch bum or sores at first when i got him i just saw white worms and treat with equest nxt day his stable was covered in dead worms i emptied his stable and scrubbed the floores i thought he was rid of them then 2 weeks later when i was gfrooming him he did a poo that had lots of worms so i gave him equest pramox full dose thought that was the end of it 2 days later he poos another live pin worm vet said hes had to much wormer so she told me to do it uo his bum that way it wont get into his stomach so in his bum it went 10 mins later he had sloppy poos full of the pin worms thought thats it ya buggers there gone so i disinfected stable moved him paddocks cleaned his bum then 2 days later i was grooming him i lifted his tail and saw sighns of pin worm eggs 2 days ago he had a sloppy poo with around 20-30 pin worms in all alive he did another poo again 20ish pin worms thought the wormer up the bum has kicked in 2day he does a normal poo with another wriggling pin worm in so still not got rid vet said either do up his bum or wait 16 weeks for the equest wormers to get out his system so he can then have a 5 day wormer i dont wnt to give it up his bum as i had to put him in a cow crush as he was having none of it but he was sooooo stressed sweating up all night i thought he was at risk of colic so im reluctaant to stress him again how ever 16 weeks is a long time to leave him with these worms so im 50\50 with what to do at the miniute. i no pin worms are the leaast damaging worm and apperently cause no health issues but i am guessing he has alot of pin worms so if i leave him 16weeks is there going to be health issues ie colic or weight problems i just dont no what to do at the miniute

They came out live from my friend's mare too.

I don't know where you are but it might be worth seeing if you can speak to Andy Durham at Liphook Equine Hospital to ask his advice. He's given presentations on the pinworm problem and really knows his stuff. He may be able to advise if there are any contraindications using another wormer from a different chemical group. For example I know that Panacur Guard is considered a gentle on the gut wormer.

After Paula had so much trouble with her mare I did all of mine with a double dose of Strongid P just in case!
