Urticaria - how to treat?

Any recommendations for successful treatments or supplements to treat a urticaria? New horsey has a small patch of lumps on his left flank - they don't seem to bother him at all - they are covered in hair, he's not itchy or sore. I can't be sure what's causing them, but wondered if anyone had experience of giving a supplement or used a shampoo to bring them down?

Yes mine had these but around his saddle area and nothing would work. Then I went onto a gastric ulcer product for 2 weeks and it allows blood flow throughout the body and they vanished in couple of days. Hope this helps.
 
Dilute Hibiscrub, leave for 10 mins then wash off. Piriton in his dinners, I use 10 tablets for a 16.1 600kg horse.
 
May be a bit heavy handed if it's not bothering him, but a steroid shot usually brings them down within the hour...
 
Thank you folks! Yeh I wanna take a non aggressive approach as they aren't bothering him and would hate to cause a problem when there isn't one! I'm goner go with the anti histamine and I hibi scrubbed the area this afternoon. Just have to dig out the old thread of where to get bumper backs of anti histamine from! Thanks again for the replies.

... and can induce laminitis and or make him hypersensitive to whatever it was that he had a reaction to in the first place. Very real issues worth considering before you opt for the 'easy' option.

Be patient with the antihistimine route. It took me several weeks to get rid of my boy's but it was worth it for not putting him at risk of laminitis (he is prone anyway)... If you have any bute, that can also help to take the swelling down.

I would consider steroids in a severe case but I don't want to get the vet out as it's not really anything to write home about - more a cosmetic problem than anything. Going to order 500 piriton now!
 
Yes they do! My horse has them if he gets a flair up - they were prescribed by vet. Now I dose him whenever he gets a reaction and keep packs handy.

Rather alarming dose - apparently they do not absorb them well.

1 box of 28 tabs Chlorphenamine Maleate 4mg twice a day for 3 - 4 days
Presently buy one get one free in Lloyds chemists. My horse is 620 kg - when he had his first reaction it had got quite advanced and he required a steroid jab too.

He is also shampooed with Etiderm shampoo every 3 days and dermasol cream applied on sore bits. I use a lavender wash or some dilute E45 bath on the days I don't bath all until it subsides!
