My horse can get quite severe urticaria and suffered from this several times last summer. As he has already had two episodes in the last month, I suggested to my vet that we use antihistimines throughout the summer. She has investigated this but isnt coming up with anything very helpful other than chlorphenamine maleate (Piriton) of which I would need to administer 20-25 tablets per dose. I am reluctant to continue treating with steroids. Is anyone using an antihistimine which comes in large doses for equine usage?

When mine had it vet prescribed Ucerax also marketed as Atavax I think.
It's only available on prescription and if I remember rightly you give about 8 - 10 tablets. Didn't work at all for mine but it's get prescribed enough that it must work for some.

In the end what worked for me was moving yards, I took him up to the vet college for allergy testing and the lumps went overnight so while we still did the testing; they said it's obviously something in your immediate area.

If they can find what it is Desensitisation injections work for some.

Mine also gets severe urticaria - but in winter. I use piriton as it is the only one I can get in high dosage without prescription - 500 tablets for £10. There are a few internet chemist sites that sell it. It certainly takes the edge off of his rash.

Natalie_H - where do you get 500 tabs for £10 - is this bought through an internet site as it is very cheap - normally market at 5.99 for 60 tabs over the counter

Yes- internet sites. No point in even trying your walk in chemists as in my experience they will only sell you a couple of packets - and they are expensive. If you google "piriton 500s" you should get some results. Quite a few sell at around the £10 mark. I think the site I use is called chemists 4 u. You have to enter symptoms when you buy - I just enter his symptoms under my name. They have not yet got suspicious over the fact that over the course of one year, one person has needed 2000 piriton!!!! :D:D:D

Hi Shils,

I jut checked out chemist 4 U again, and they have got Zirtek on there (similar to Atarax I believe) at 79p for 30 tablets. You can buy 12 packs at a time. Might be worth a shot. Mine started on Atarax on recommendation from the vet, but it was difficult to get hold of them without going through the vet.

£6 a day is a nightmare. I'm just lucky that we have seen results with the piriton!

Thanks Natalie H, I am considering moving her to cetirizine (sp?) as it would be both easier and cheaper.
I believe it's a metabolyte of hydroxyzine anyway, so hopefully will work as well.

Hi Shils. I've read that cetirizine is supposed to be very good for this sort of reaction as the effects of it last twice as long as piriton for example. Will you get it from your vet? I am interested to try on my TB. Let me know how you get on if you make the switch. I have been researching this damn allergy for 7 years now with him, and although now managing it pretty well, still yet to find a truly satisfactory result! :D
