Has anyone got any suggestion on how to treat this? My mare has come out in softish lumps that are sensitive when you touch them, she flinches. No change in any of her routine so I am presuming its a reaction to grass or something in it.

Often it just goes down in a few days, but if it continues its worth cutting everything out and gradually reintroducing things - easier said than done!

The vets can give steroid injections which help, but to be honest after my mare had them twice at Christmas, I wouldn't go for that route again, as the allergy went down after each injection, but only till the steroids were out of her system, so in 3 days it came back as bad as before.

What worked for her in the end - after this going on for a good 2 - 3 weeks and me cutting everything out of her diet, switching stables/bedding, cleaning rugs, keeping her off the field etc etc, was a course of Global Herbs Immuplus and Restore - she was back to normal in a week after looking like some kind of mutant horse for ages - her welts and lumps were huge and her knees had swelled up to with fluid.

She's been fine ever since and I still don't know what caused the problem.

kalamine lotion dabbed on with cotton wool relieves the itching and cools the area down and the chalky residue it leaves when dry will brush out easily enough.

Bath in baby shampoo in case it's a contact allergy (my lad gets it if washing powder is changed or they change the ingredients, don't over rug/allow her to become too hot as this aggravates it, dermoline takes it dwn a bit on mine (can't use calamine as he's allergic to it and so am I

)

with mine his allergy hasn't completely gone but the global herbs combination DoubleThyme mentioned helped plus I took all rugs off a thin coated TB in the freezing weather just after xmas.
Far from minding he seemed to appreciate it and always seemed warm when I checked him.
I think this summer lots of baths to keeps him cool will help too.

incidentally the vets at the RVC said allergies are something that can appear in horses who have never had a problem before so don't necessarily assume it must be something new; it could be something your horse had had no problem with previously.
