US may have come to it's senses! Possible new slaughterhouse to open

I used to be very against the slaughter of horses for meat until I educated myself a bit better as to what the alternative was. I also saw the obvious hypocracy of my beliefs.


Well the ban went through anyhow and all the equine slaughterhouses were closed down here. The negative effects on horse welfare were IMMEDIATE! Many were abandoned, left to live in hell, or transported on long journeys out of the country to see the very same fate in (often) less humane places.
It devastated a portion of the horse market and drove prices for many horses ( not just meat horses) way down.

Well it seems there is some hope here now for a new slaughterhouse. Althouh it does make me sad I know ( as a horse lover) we really need this to be here.


The neglectful, cheap owners and over breeders will never go away and I just want the most humane solution to clean up their mess.


If people want to eat them who am I to judge? Just because it is not MY desire it does not mean it may not be someone elses.

That is excellent news; it really is. As with any other animal on the planet, (including humans), there is a reality that has to be faced; they are not immortal. The US ban on slaughterhouses has been catastrophic, and I am so glad it is being rethought. Now maybe we would reopen may of the smaller slaughterhouses over here to eliminate long journeys to slaughter for farm animals. Just a thought...
 
It really did not take them long to see how horrible the idea was did it?


I would like to see them all over here too. The US is a big place and Montana is still quite a journey for some.
 
Although the sentiment is wonderful, and I wholly agree that new slaughterhouses specifically constructed for horses in mind is a great leap forward ... but Montana?? I mean really, let's just hope that it is the first of many more to come

How dare you say its nice and great that horses may be slaughterd again, America went through a lot of shxt just to shut down a few slaughter houses, and the equestrian communitys all around the world will be in shreds, THEY DO REHABILITATE horses that are bred for meat ya' know!!!

ITS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL FOR HORSES TO BE BRED FOR MEAT AND BE TRANSPORTED TO A DIFFRENT COUNTRY JUST TO GET THE FORGOTTON FAIT LEFT IN THE DESOLATE SLAUGHTERHOUSES OF THE USA!!!

Call yourselfs, horse lovers. EMPATHY girls, i'm only young and my best friends horse got slaughterd without her knowing, you put yourself in her horses shoes, you think you will have a great life at a show home and then BANG your being led through a slaughter house door, is that so good?

Absolutly, in humane, we're talking brilliant, healthy, BEAUTIFUL horses here hundreds of them everyweek discovering the harsh reality of the species that once took pleasure in riding them and being around them for company!

They can't put them in rehab as there are too many and no one wants them. Who is going to pay for the rehab? You are right about transporting them to other countries to get slaughtered should be banned. But to ban that they need a slaughterhouse in the US.
 
After seeing the sheer horrors of the Mexican slaughter houses on UTube where many beautiful. as well as old sick animals end up, I wholeheartedly am in favour of this plan to build a new slaughterhouse in the States. The Americans should take responsibility for the welfare of their animals as all civilised nations should. The fates these poor horses are subjected too sadly overshadows,( in terms of the length of the journey and the fact that no stops are made), the still dreadful conditions that European horses experience when being transported to slaughter houses in Italy.Publicity and the work by organisations such World Horse Welfare are starting to make a difference, and numbers are reducing annually.

The methods used to kill the horses in the Mexican slaughter houses are beyond comprehension, compassion or dignity.

The journey of many American horses especially the racehorses (whos racing career is often over before they are past 4 years old) to these Mexican slaughter houses has been a well kept 'Dark Secret' that the Americans should be truely ashamed of. It is heartbreaking to see such fine horses so abused and subjected to such brutality when in all their young lives they have experienced comparative luxury and care.
It must be extremely traumatic for them.
Its very sad that so much in life is just about money, profit and gain.

Lets hope the whole sorry business starts to receive more publicity now.

This is Mel's mum here, and my daughter is a bit upset over what you have asked her to watch. She has a straight opinion and you cannot change it. You've upset her on a massive scale.

Horse slaughter is wrong and always will be wrong, you say to her watch a video that from the play button made her burst into tears. Please whoever posted that stop it, shes made her point and maybe you want horses to be slaughterd for their own good I dont know. Horses have done nothing but amaze us from the word go, they do not and never will deserve to be slaughterd for meat. Im not arguing as that would be childish it upsets me to see grown woman asking a teenage to watch a video that you know may make her be sick, you sit their and watch it, you took the time to search it.

Maybe we deserve to be slaughtered, let ourselves know what monsters we've become.

Why is horse slaughter inhumane when it is done quickly and quietly by a highly skilled professional?

Provided the horses have a reasonably happy life beforehand and are not transported for days to get there, I would rather they meet a quick end at a slaughter house, than be left standing somewhere abused and/or neglected for years on end.

As for making breeding horses for meat illegal, are you going to make breeding sheep, cattle and pigs for meat illegal too?

Yes, in a dream world every horse on the planet would have a long happy life in a field, love by someone, but in reality there are just too many horses in this world for that to happen.

I'm sure it was no ones aim to upset your daughter quite so much.

However thank god if the states are changing the law!! Those poor poor horses that have to travel to Mexico to end their days is sick and wrong.

Lets hope this will be the first of many!
 
Yes I was shocked about the unwanted horses in the states and how the slaugterhouses were being closed causing untold suffering to them in mexican slaugterhouses and the long journeys thanks to misguided celebs and other nut jobs..
sadly there will always be unwanted horses and we have to do the best for them we also have to make sure we dont add to the problem with our breeding or should I say lack of good breeding I would like to see more geldings!!! would also outlaw the breeding of horses for meat .. if you can eat horseflesh well you have no soul or respect for the animal who has seen man from barbarism to civalization and along with dogs and cats are our faithfull servants and companions...
 
The harsh realities of a forum, and of there being too many of a species to handle. Humans have bred/allowed to be bred too many horses, so something has to be done about it.

Travelling horses over great distances to their slaughter is the sick part.

To be the richest person on earth, to be able to buy up every single one of these beautiful and noble beasts, still would not solve the problem - humans are, unfortunately at times, humans and as such some will continue to breed and to add to the numbers.

Understand that we are horse lovers, we love them for all their ways, and we spend the vast majority of our lives looking after the ones we can. The ones we can't we have to hope they meet their end in the most humane way possible.

I did not intend to cause Melanie any distress but if she insists on voicing an uninformed opinion then I feel that she needs to be educated in the matter. I do not eat horsemeat and never would but when the consequences of a ban on horse slaughter for whatever reason, results in the conditions shown on the Youtube video then you have to look at the bigger picture of horse welfare. I too, used to be very strongly against horse slaughter but I have had my eyes opened and am realistic enough to know that sometimes it is necessary. Please tell your daughter that I am sorry if she was upset by the video as I said, this was not my intention.

It is very obvious from your daughter's post that she is indeed young. The OP was posting to let others who have been concerned about horses travelling hundreds of miles to Mexico to be slaughtered in inhumane conditions know that the USA is beginning to take steps to end this practice. No-one was rejoicing that horses go to slaughter per se. Perhaps you should encourage your daughter to read carefully and think out her replies before posting. It is of course possible that she upset some people with the hysterical tone of her post, which had rather mised the point.

If she thinks she is grown up enough to express such an accusatory ,strong and (supposedly) informed opinion, then she had best be grown up enough to hear what others (that are attempting to open her eyes) have to say back to her!


The fact she needs her mommy to come on here on her behalf tells me she in not grown up enough at all............




Perhaps her internet access should be monitored BY YOU if she is so easilly upset by real life matters.


 
i used to think horse slaughter was sick and gross... but actually the alternative is farrrr worse... i watched some of those horse slaughter videos on youtube... and i thought well atleast these animals are going towards something rather than just starving in some feild.... although i would never eat horse i can see why it is done... there are far too many horses to be rahbilitated... my only hope is that the travelling conditions vastly imrpve and that they do not have to travel for such a long distance.....
