Just got a call to pick my 11 year old deerhound up from work, as he had a tumour removed from his leg today....I was fine...right up until my vet said...Oh, he has a heart murmur, when checking him over for his pre-med
crazy.gif
"gulp" went my throat
crazy.gif

we went ahead, as tumour was growing pretty quick......I left when he was safely knocked out, as was on night shift last night........and now im off to collect my boy.

Happy post

Thats good news, bet he will be glad to be home again. Good job you didn't know about the murmur before he had the op, would have been an even more stressful day!

Glad he came through it well Cala

But how DO you get your dogs to live so long? You have your 15 yr old greyhound x whippet (I was told average age for a greyhound is max 12) and now a 11 yr old deerhound (I always thought that as a 'giant' breed they lived to about 9-10 yrs old!) I am SO impressed

I did LOL about the heart murmur though - I am too used to CKCS, a heart murmur doesnt bother me a bit now as they all seem to have them
grin.gif
My two whippets did too - although none of the greyhounds or lurchers have lived long enough to get one

Awww...very pleased!! What grade is the heart murmur? How nice of you to wait until he was safely knocked out

I was knackered, and could not stay for whole anaesthetic, as warm in op theatre, I would have dropped off, so he was left in the capable hands of my fave vet and nurse

, other than me

LMAO

It was a slight murmur,
smile.gif
sounded like thickening of the valves my vet thought, he will suffer a gush back of blood every so often, hence his coughing recently....no need for meds though
laugh.gif

He did a bloody good job, and scooped right into the bone, and also had x-rays, to check this chest, no cancer present

I knew 10 mins b4 he was knocked out
shocked.gif
, it was make a decision time.........NOW...Lol, both vet and me decided better to go through, logic tells me, leaving a tumour to grow, and having a front leg removed from a deerhound, is a bad idea....lol

I was worried, hence, why I only got 2 hours sleep, after a 15 hour shift

Oh God does that mean I have Flick for another thirteen years plus then? She was neutered at 1 and a half, so quite young
smile.gif
Or of course you may just be a super wonderful dog owner

at what age would you recommend having a female dog spayed out of interest? When I was growing up it was normal (I think I remember rightly) to let them have 2 seasons so they mature, whereas now it seems to be 6 months?

I was messing

, as studies say, it cuts short the dogs life and increases cancers, but not in my experience.........My whippey x grey was neutered a 6 months b4 her first season, and the deerhound at 9 months, both healthy and cancer free.

My whippet, I lost 2 years ago, from cancer was spayed at 2 years cos I did not get her till then....just seems my younger neuters are living longer, disclaimer*this is not a study*
grin.gif
:grin
I could never leave a bitch 2 seasons....but thats just personal preference....I do mine at 6 months bitch, and 9 months dog, if I get them in young enough to do so. I also have a 16 year old cat, neva seen a vet in her life, she was done at 5 months, she looks about 4
shocked.gif
grin.gif
, my mam left her when she moved, I was a young'un, when mam brought her home
grin.gif

I also board a 17 year old colli, neutered at 12 months.
thats just a few examples

that's interesting, I never read studies on it mainly because you read one and it says one thing then another that says the complete opposite! I have to say I would not look forward to Layla having seasons as Bailey is bad enough with her now (and he is neutured!) - I also think it may lead to problems with her and Jazmine? Jazmine is spayed but very dominant to the other dogs..never had 2 females together only 2 males before.
Thanks Cala, I won't be so concerned about having her done at 6 months now
smile.gif

ps we had our cat spayed at 6 months and she is now 12 and acts and looks like a baby too

If you have a large to med breed of dog, by spaying early you are preventing the dogs growth, as this size of dog doesnt stop growing til about 18mths of age. So effectively you may end up with a smaller sized dog.

Ps - Congrats CALA on your deerhounds op!
