Im selling my horse, a woman is arranging to come and view him, she is coming from the USA.

Now i am just curious as to why she'd be willing to come so far? Are horses more expensive in USA?

I dont mind where shes from as long as shes serious! So whats the difference in showjumpers here and in the USA?

Wow she must be keen.I have no idea about horse prices as such in the USA but the prices i saw when we were out there (in the local tackshops) they were alot cheaper than the UK.

I highly doubt horses are more expensive here. I have noticed the very opposite tbh. I am not really into the showjumping area of knowledge though so may be wrong.

I suspect if she is finding a bargain she is after a quality or breeding she cannot find here

It must be worth it to her as having the horse shipped over must cost a fortune!

Good luck! I would imagine anyone willing to give that much effort into a purchase would be highly likely to be a desirable home

the usa is MUCH less ageist and will happily pay 'big bucks' for them if they are genuine, where as here people are not ALWAYS so keen on an older (16/17) schoolmaster...

also, yes the horses are more expensive over there, although as here, the prices vary greatly... its not unusual to see horses on the west coast advertised for $25,000 - $60,000 for a standard 1.10m horse...
thats my view anyway...
hope that helps...

Thanks guys, my horse is very well bred, and scopey (so maybe thats what shes after?)

Im just gobsmacked that someone is willing to travel all that way and back to look at a horse! Saying that i went to see the horse shes looking at in holland but thats not to far away.

I will let you know if anything comes of it.

C_B- i cant search her name as i dont know ut, the horse is being sold by someone for me.

They are much dearer. lol.
We have sold a couple to USA (go to http://www.ultimatedressagehorse.com or CLICK HERE go to the references page and scroll down to Troy - he was sold on in Florida for $125K - Look on the News page to see UDH pip in Miami - it's gorgeous!!! I think they are after $75k for him? - He is a year younger than Troy )
And I would agree with SJ - an older horse is possibly an advantage!

She must be serious because i am lead to believe that it costs IRO 10k ($) to import the geldings and more for mares and stallions!

Its very fashionable on the hunter/jumper scene in America to import from Europe.

And yes, hunter/jumper type horses are very expensive over there, particularly hunter types.

Just a few examples:

just started at prelim, equiv to BE Novice - 55k

28k, green horse, done some low level showing

25k, done very little, doesn't look terribly special.

I have known people to sell hunter ponies that are jumping around 3ft at shows but placing well, get upwards of 100k for them.

I was also going to suggest they would do it for status/bragging rights/ or as you say "fashionable" reasons

That would have been my first guess...just did not want to say it! lol

lol! I run a forum whose members are mostly American. Pretty much everyone on there who has a bit of money and competes higher than about 3ft in the hunter/jumper world goes to Europe and imports a ridiculously expensive horse

The difference in price is quite staggering actually. Over here half-decent sj's or dressage horses cost an absolute fortune!! So if your horse is fairly decent and has good bloodlines then yes it is probably worth her while to import the horse if it is up to the job. Best of luck.
