Used saddle sale: now buyer wants refund! Would you?

Like others have said, I'd get proof that they had the maker certify it as 15". Either way, it's been far too long and surely no one can just go by their word that they have only just tried it.

If you buy from a retailer (distance/online selling) you have a 14 day cooling off period as you wouldn't have seen it previously. In a store, 28 days. Neither of these are 6 weeks! If I ever sell anything (distance or otherwise), of any value, a receipt is written up stating sold as seen, with the buyer signing both copies to confirm they are happy with the item and the condition. I keep a copy and they get a copy....just in case! Gives me something to fall back on in case something goes wrong

You are perfectly within your rights (as a private seller) to say it was sold as seen, and even if you were a seller, most returns must happen within 28 days, so over that too.
Tell them to be normal, and sell on like you did. And its nothing to do with you if the pony needed to settle in or the find it uncomfortable. And remember they could be lying about the 15 inch thing too.
People just try it on to see what they can get away with.

I would ask for a signed report from the manufacturer/ fitter stating it's a 15" and that it's not damaged. How do you know they haven't used it for 6 weeks, damaged it and that's why they want to send it back? When that doesn't materialise (I'm almost certain it won't) tell them to jog on.

Even if it's a 15" this wouldn't affect its material value or their ability to sell it on so I don't see that the mistake you made (if it is indeed 15") is going to leave them out of pocket. It's not like you described it as a more expensive model than it is or as mint condition when it's broken.
