Hi

I've a slight problem as I used to go horse riding on a very regular basis (weekly and have ridden since I was 8) and only had to give it up recently (I last went horse riding in September last year). This is because I was at University and I had to concentrate on my work and only had to give it up due to the high marks (80% which counted in my last year and this is coupled as I have dyspraxia so need double concentration to get the grades).

Before that I last went before the easter holidays as I went on a field trip abroad with uni and ended up getting ill afterwards, as a result the last time I went riding I was very unfit and all I was able to do was just hack out.

Fast forward to today and I have now finished University, and recently I got better as I have been too ill to do anything. In the new year I would love to start horse riding again, as I have missed it an awful lot. I also watched the olympics over the summer and enjoyed and felt really bad about not been able to ride for such a long time.

I am really unfit and was wondering if there was anyone who could help me and give me advice in helping get my fitness levels back up so and with advice in getting back in the saddle as I am a little nervous about it with it been so long.

Thank you in advance.

Hi, I would suggest finding a reputable riding school near you so you can have a few lessons. If it makes you feel more comfortable have a few lunge lessons to help get you back in the swing of things. I'm sure if you explained your situation to the riding school they will be able to accommodate you. Once you have had a few lessons you could always look for a share if you miss the horse care aspects of riding.

As for getting your fitness levels up, going jogging is a good (and free!) idea. Start off walking first for short periods of time/sessions and then gradually reduce the amount of walking and increase the amount of gentle jogging and gradually increase the length of your sessions.

If you are willing to pay for fitness improving activities then joining a gym would be a would be a good idea as you often get to create a fitness program. Try and see if there are any times when the fees are lower (for example my local gym has cheaper fees if you go before 5pm). Swimming is also another good activity to help improve your fitness.

I hope this helps!

To help with the core muscles and balance, a large balance ball is a brilliant idea, and can be used when you are watching TV, or even being embroiled in HHO:)

To develop your riding muscles (which are different from general fitness) either go to a recommened by wom RS or try lessons on a mechanical horse or ask a friend with a sensible horse to allow you to ride for a few sessions and then take it from there.

good luck!
