Uses of lard for horses and horsey stuff??

Farrier has told me to put lard on A's feet. THEN I started wondering what else it could be used for, tack perhaps? Although it sounds a bit gross, the stuff I bought for A is odourless and looks quite innofensive...
Ideas anyone?

Isn't Neatsfoot oil mostly made from lard nowadays?

My uncle used to put lard on skin sores on his horses. Not something I had ever heard of, but it did heal up well.

Ah, that's interesting; I melted some to put in a tub and it went exactly the same orangey colour neatsfoot oil is (the stuff over here)

We used to smear lard on the horse who lived out and didn't wear rugs, it made them very waterproof!

I read a book about a cowboy who oiled the insides of his legs with lard and cooking fat to toughen them up so he could ride better.....

We always used Goosefat for soft swellings. It generates an enormous amount of heat and is particularly effective for closed hock swellings and capped hocks. It is so strong it will remove all the hair but is fabulous. The hair will grow back once you stop using it!
