Hello,
I'm going to be using a duvet on my clipped mare this year...she's going to have a huunter clip.
I was just wondering what weight (human) duvet to use?
Just seen one in my cupboard and its 725g! ? -surely this would be to heavy, especially with another on top.
Can anyone suggest a suitable weight?
Thanks for any help:)

I use a summer weight one but i use it as an extra layer in extreme cold- between a stable rug and a full neck under rug.
Buy one with a cottony feeling outer, at work we always use duvets and have some cheaper polyester feeling ones and the horses get sweaty/clammy feeling or their rugs sometimes feel damp. Guess its because they are not breathable- the cotton ones are fine and dont get that problem.

I use a summer weight one - 7.5 tog? At the moment I have a fleece, then the duvet and then a MW stable rug. I have a fully clipped TB and she is lovely and warm in this.

I also use a dovet ... Sorry don't know what weight it is. He's in a dovet two fleeces and a light stable rug... He's lovely and toasty :)

I wouldn't use anything heavier than a 4.5 tog (summer weight) echo about the cotton covering too, nylon/polyester don't give them a chance to breathe. While you don't want horse too cold you don't want it so hot it's almost sweating either. How some horses cope with fleeces, rugs and a duvet too beats me, it's far too molly coddling as they need to be able to regulate their own temperature and as far as I know, they can't take off or put on rugs on their own if they're uncomfortable and heavy neck covers are ludicrous in stables, totally a marketing ploy.

I no that my horse isn't to warm and I would not be letting him
Get to hot or sweat. When he's clipped hes a right wimp and gets cold. I'm not an idiot and know how to look after him thank you.

Rhinegold sell a horse duvet which says it's 12.5 tog, so I assume to buy a normal duvet of this weight would be ok, no..???

Dont buy a duvet - put a request on your local Freecycle website! When people buy new ones the old ones just end up in their loft for years until they go to landfill. This way that have another life.

I specifically said I wanted one for my horse and poeple were glad to help. In the end I was given 5 which I have shared around my yard.:)

So does anyone have a foolproof way of making sure duvets don't slip back under the rug? I find fleeces or Thermatex rugs worn all night (or all day) pull back and get very tight across the chest, and get static under nylon-lined rugs.

Sometimes I miss the days when we used blankets (2 or 3 on clipped oldies) under jute rugs with a wool/blanket lining, and they always stayed perfectly in place with the front corners folded back to the withers, and the 'point' flipped back over the rug to be secured with a roller!
