Using a saddlepad to back a youngster?

Hi,

I would welcome experiences from anybody who has succesfully backed a youngster using a bareback saddle pad.

Also would love to hear from anyone who hit snags? Any problems in particular? Any do's or dont's.

Also what type did you use and which would you recommend, or not!

I would say you probably could, not sure how secure it would be to sit on through! Also then I guess you will have to go about introducing a saddle seperately then with a rider on anyway as it will have a completely different feel to the bareback pad?
 
im doing this also! as dont want to fork out for a nice saddle just yet, how ever will be using a treeless once were out riding! Then when he has stopped his growth spurts and providing my back will allow me iim going to get a posh fancy new saddle lol!

so far i have had sucsess, we have had issues of it slipping, and this is horses from the past, but initially my youngster doesnt mind things being inbetween his legs, as have had them slip and end up there, with me on the floor *usually laughing*
 
^^ That's good to know :) I don't want to do falling off though as it is a very looooong way down!

I do have a nice broad breastgirth I could use with it I was thinking.

Which model are you planning on using just out of interest?
 
I used a libra saddle pad to back my girl. All well until bought proper saddle (from good saddler, £1300 worth!) which sadly coincided with ovarian pain and resulted in a major dumping for me. She is currently being re backed with Matthew Hall because I lost confidence and don't want her thinking dumping mum is ok.
Having said that I felt totally secure in the pad, hacking out etc not a problem.

Ooh..this one looks good! Might try this one mine, sorry for hijacking...I am about to be doing the same thing.

Anyone tried the cashel soft saddle? heard good and bad things
 
The Christ pads are wonderful. Use with a proper dressage girth, so very stable too. My only quibble is that my horse is quite broad, and you don't have the twist of a saddle, so after a 3 mile ride, I have to walk like John Wayne for a bit :D

Beautiful soft sheepskin, though, and doesn't seem to get dirty (mine is the natural colour, I didn't know they did a black one).
