Have been given a mare with a nasty puncture wound to hock. Vet thinks its a boney sequestrum (bad news as surgery is a no go seeing as she isn't insured as already had the injury). Just wondering people's experience using DMSO. Wound is on this outer side of the hock joint. Inflammation and infection present. On day 10 of her second course of AB wound is responding. Previously, The wound had just about healed after inital ABs when she first arrived. But she went through some fencing and just partially removed scab, the whole leg then swelled up again .... Hence the suspected sequestrum as she had come off the fitst lot of ABs 3 weeks prior. vet said I would have had to be really unlucky for that level of infection to be caused by only partially removing scab and was more likely due to a sequestrum. Anyway, I have 3 weeks of ABs to give, was also going to use DMSO as I have read it can help the body reabsorb any bone fragments. Worth a shot??? How would I apply it? Mixed with glycerine, painted on and then wrapped for an hour? Mare would have been put down sooner if I had not taken her as race yard didn't want to know, they didnt even bother to get the vet. Obviously if I can't get her right I will have to PTS. It's a shame as she is not lame but vet quoted me £3500 for surgery, I know taking her on was a long shot both financially and emotionally but I had to give it a chance.
