Have been given a mare with a nasty puncture wound to hock. Vet thinks its a boney sequestrum (bad news as surgery is a no go seeing as she isn't insured as already had the injury). Just wondering people's experience using DMSO. Wound is on this outer side of the hock joint. Inflammation and infection present. On day 10 of her second course of AB wound is responding. Previously, The wound had just about healed after inital ABs when she first arrived. But she went through some fencing and just partially removed scab, the whole leg then swelled up again .... Hence the suspected sequestrum as she had come off the fitst lot of ABs 3 weeks prior. vet said I would have had to be really unlucky for that level of infection to be caused by only partially removing scab and was more likely due to a sequestrum. Anyway, I have 3 weeks of ABs to give, was also going to use DMSO as I have read it can help the body reabsorb any bone fragments. Worth a shot??? How would I apply it? Mixed with glycerine, painted on and then wrapped for an hour? Mare would have been put down sooner if I had not taken her as race yard didn't want to know, they didnt even bother to get the vet. Obviously if I can't get her right I will have to PTS. It's a shame as she is not lame but vet quoted me £3500 for surgery, I know taking her on was a long shot both financially and emotionally but I had to give it a chance.

I used DMSO on a very large splint that kept flaring back up (was worried because it was so large it was getting close to his knee). We were in a similar situation to yourself, no insurance, took him on with the problem, was going to be put down, but he was an ex polo pony rather than ex race. Vet had a look and suggested DMSO. We just scrubbed on with a tooth brush. Between that and rest it worked really well I imagine it was the rest that brought him sound but the splint itself visibly shrank in size significantly and I'd say that was largely due to the DMSO. He came sound and went on to event. Good luck with yours. For us I'd say the DMSO really helped, hope it's as good for you.

So did you just literally use neat medical grade DMSO straight onto the area where the inflammation was? I'd you just leave it unwrapped? Did you do it daily? Did you have I wash it off.... Sorry for the questions !!!

Vet gave us a bottle of DMSO which I would assume was medical grade DMSO neat but it's possible that he had diluted it down and what I was given was the diluted down version but it looked like it was neat and in the original bottle. I clipped a small square of hair over the splint as short as possible, cut the bristles short on a tooth brush so it would fit into the top of the bottle and then scrubbed it straight onto the area. I never washed it off and never left wrapped. I can't remember if it was once or twice a day, sorry. However, in this case there was no wound, no broken skin and no infection. I don't know if/how this method of using it would need be altered when the skin was broken which it sounds like in your case it is. Hope this helps a little, don't worry about lots of questions, ask away :D! Hopefully somebody else might have experience of using it in a more similar situation to yours. :)

Thanks! How long did you use it for?

Cant remember now, it was a few years ago, I have a feeling it wasn't anything very specific ie a week or two but rather until the heat had gone from it maybe. But I'm really not sure, I could be making that bit up entirely !

i was given it for a splint, didnt shrink it, you can use it 3 times aday, but again mine wasnt an open wound. hope all works out, at least your given her a chance. lets us now how you get on, sending good vibes.

also i used it for a for a long time hoping to shrink it, but vet said if it didnt sort it in 1-2 weeks wasnt going to work.

also mine was neat and i used a small paint brush
