Using horse shampoo on the dog - good or bad idea?

I have this in stock, it’s great on the horses, can I use a smidge to bathe a very grubby long coated JRT?

I’m quite happy to buy in dog shampoo if necessary. Amazon has many options for dogs, but I’ve no idea if they are truly necessary.

If I do need to get a special dog shampoo, can anyone recommend me a decent brand? Doesn’t need to be medicated or anything special.
 
Check the ingredients and compare them to the shampoos marketed specifically for dogs maybe....I can't see why it wouldn't be fine though.
The tea tree might not be a good idea if pooch is very sensitive skinned or has allergies.
 
Tea tree is toxic to dogs (and cats).

I don't know if dermal exposure from the low concentration of tea tree in the shampoo would be a problem or not.

Products with low concentrations (e.g. shampoos, body washes) are generally not considered toxic.

You can buy dog shampoo with tea tree oil. I have some here that was all the local shop had.
 
I thought it was only toxic if ingested but ok on normal skin - just not sure if the same compounds in it that make it a problem if consumed could cause an issue on sensitive skin. And definitely don't use on anything irritated or broken.

I wouldn’t have chosen to have bought it. And I’m not a frequent washer. But it smells better than fox poo and has done no visible harm 😀
 
I’ve often wondered why some horse shampoos don’t have ingredients listed.

All I’ve used on her are leftover bottles from the horses but I do an extra rinse just because 🤷🏻‍♀️
 
I would use it.

My dogs have been washed in all manner of random shampoo if they have rolled in something yuck and I have not had any dog shampoo in the house.

Just reiterating SD’s point as I have known a fatality - the small, diluted amounts in proprietary pet shampoos are fine, but neat tea tree essential oil applied to the skin is highly toxic. It does not have to be ingested.

I know you shouldn't put it undiluted on any skin alot like alot of essential oils.
 
Not that specific one but I've bathed Purdey in the Wahl horse shampoo a few times before when down at the yard with her. As many others have said I would use the one posted on her if nothing else in.

As a side note as you mentioned recommendations, the animology fox poo shampoo really does do what it says on the tin (sadly speaking from many experiences 🤢🤣)

I had heard that tea tree oil was toxic to cats, but I didn’t know that it was also toxic to dogs. Thanks for the heads up that it is ok when much diluted in shampoos, etc.

We don’t have any full strength essential oils here, but it’s very much something to bear in mind.
 
I think a fair few essential oils can be toxic neat just because they're so concentrated, but ingredients are listed by order of proportion so in cosmetics they're far enough down to be ok
 
I've used dog shampoo on me and human shampoo on the dogs. Also washing up liquid on dogs, horses and humans👿

A lot of smells are also toxic to dogs. Including fabric conditioner they don't need to ingest it. This is why I hate highly scented products on animals. What smells amazing to humans is sometimes very harmful to animals.
