Using Human Products on Horses

Homemade fly spray
Aloe vera gel and tonic *****:D
Arnica tablets (for knocks and bruises)
Leave-in conditioner
Germolene (minor cuts etc plus flies don't like it!)
Baby wipes (around eyes)
Suncream (for pink nose)
Cold black tea for swollen/puffy legs etc
Paintbrush (instead of hoof brush for kevin bacon!)

:D Best get myself down to Specsavers, I read that as Gin and Tonic:D:D

Tesco's own shampoo and conditioner, sudocrem, baby wipes, baby oil, fairy liquid, vinegar, salt (to make electrolytes). They're the main things which come to mind - baby wipes are truly the best thing to have around horses.

Do you use rescue remedy on your horse? does it work? :)

Yes, I put a few drops in his water the night before a show and in the trailer at the show I rub it in my hand and let him sniff it.

I also gave it to him when we moved yards.

I have found it works, he's quite anxious and gets very excited at shows (to the point we can't tack up outside the trailer) and it just helps take the edge off of him. We found it got a bit pricey after a while though so we now give him Blue Chip Karma which I really think is working.

This thread is fantastic!
I like to use sunscreen during the day and last thing at night but after sun on the horse's nose and it works a treat :)

Blue bags (not sure you can get them still). Use for a final rinse on white horses.
I also feed oil, which I get from work- used chip oil.

Sudocrem
Baby Wipes - Muddy grey horse + Baby wipes = Clean grey horse :D
Fairy Liquid
Vasaline
Kids sun cream (She doesn't let me put normal stuff on - yeah she's a bit odd :p)

Wash&Go, sudocream, baby oil, savlon, vaseline. The most decadent product is probably Dream Cream from Lush cosmetics which worked a treat when his skin was dry and itchy! :D

Do you use rescue remedy on your horse? does it work? :)

I use the rescue remedy(just a few drops into the mouth) I also use some aromotherapy oils definately works just need to find out which ones your horse likes and then you can let them smell it or put a bit in an oil and wipe it on x

My hairdresser told me that the cheaper the shampoo is, the milder it is so I use supermarket own brands that are around 70p/litre, same conditioner, hibiscrub, vaseline, etc. Now wondering if I should try baby oil on the cob's mallenders - might be easier to get on than pig oil!

OP - how do you make your homemade flyspray? I have Skin So Soft and was thinking of doing just as you are but wasn't sure whether to just slosh a bit of water in with it and how much. . . ???

I just made a new batch last night :)

My recipie for a 500ml spray is:

About 1/3rd of the bottle of SSS.
Top up to nearly the top with apple cider vinegar.
Add about 20 drops of citronella
Add a good squirt of baby shampoo (to act as an emulsifier)
I also add about 50 drops of neem as it's good for warding off any little critters.

Give it a good shake before each use works wonders even on the pescie cow flies!

I wil not use Fairy Liquid or any other washing up liquid to bath my lot. It strips every bit of oil from their coats. One of mine came back from a producers yard with his whole body dry and scabby from her using this to wash (and obviously not rinsing it off properly!) He had been washed with Fairy the whole winter and it took me a year to get his skin right again. If you bath with washing up liquid and come back from a show , turf them into a field and it rains their "waterproofness" will not be there and they will literaly be soaked to the skin.

Any bathing would do this, not just washing up liquid, common sense not to let them get rained on with no oils in the coat!

Optrex
Baby Oil
Vaseline
Honey for wounds

I never use human shampoo as a previous owner told me she had used it on him and brought him up in dreadful sores. I am very careful what I put on him and keep to an absolute minimum.

BEWARE! Don't use it neat on their coat! I did this years ago on my then young welsh cob and the areas where I put it came up in a terrible rash and soreness, like rainscald type thing. It took for ever to get it right and for years she had lumpy areas on her back. I always dilute thoroughly now with more base oil or as you say, just let them smell it!!!
