I was told that you shouldnt hack out in a jumping saddle or use it for any length of time. Is this correct? Ive always done a lot of work in my jumping saddle purely because I felt safer in it.

I have a TB who has a bates jump saddle - he does everything in it from dressage and hacking to the obvious jumping.
Have never heard you shouldn't use it for any length of time though.

I have a jumping saddle for my mare as it's the only one that fitted her (I tried three different saddle fitters).

Anyhoo... I was told that as my saddle was flocked, there should be no problem. The only saddles that I have been told that you need to watch backs carefully with (if you're using them as the only saddle) are the foam flocked ones. However as I've never had a foam flocked saddle, I don't know how true this is.

I've never heard that, and am unsure why that would be the case.

FWIW, Reg is hacked in his jumping saddle as it's that or his dressage saddle- no GP, as 3 saddles is excessive in the extreme! His back is fine, he's going better than ever and Al's position is improving a lot in both the dressage and over jumps. He is also hacked out in the dressage saddle though, just to keep the familiarity with it...

I do everything in jump saddle but it does tend to make me ride bit shorter - trying to lengthen stirrups at mo for schooling - put them down another hole today and it felt great - didnt matter it was a jump not dressage. I have used mine every ride for last 2 years with no prob and had it and back check recently and all A OK !

Mine is hacked (when sound!) in either his jumping or dressage saddle. I bought the (treeless) dressage saddle as going on slow hacks in my jumping saddle would kill my back - for fast hacks it is fab though! My treeless saddle is fab for slow, schooling hacks. :)

what do showjumpers ride in to school if not a jumoing saddle, I cant see how its any different to a GP unless you are not balanced on it and are affecting horse.

I do everthing in my dressage saddle as it suits me, if a jumping saddle did then I would ride in one of those. I would rather be comfy and not tense / stiff in my dressage than in a GP but have my hips seize up and cause tension / stiffnes in my legs and back.

It's a load of b*ll*cks probably said by some saddler ages ago who wanted to flog someone another saddle.

When I'm not side saddling, I ride in a close contact jumping saddle with foam panels. It's the only saddle that does not shoot forward onto Hattie's shoulders and that she does not try to buck me off. I've tried every sort of saddle, all the big names, Saddle Company, Barnsby, Jeffries...dressage, GP, etc, they've slid forward and she's bucked in them all and it's a plain old foam paneled saddle from a small Walsall company, Classic Saddlery, that ends up fitting her the best.

I don't know if I would trust foam in cheap saddles but this particular company uses the best quality foam.

As long as the saddle fits correctly, then it doesn't matter if it's foam or wool or what discipline it is.

Have heard this from some pep, but I do everything in my jump saddle including hunting all day and all seems fine :) to be fair I would think that most eventers would as they prop have a jump and dressage saddle, certainly think most showjumpers do, how's it any different from dressage riders being in dressage saddles most of the time? Allthough agreed they aren't the best for flatwork, but as I don't do specfic flatwork it's not really a proplem for me as I tend to keep the same lenghth strirupps which are short, most of the time.

I think youve been told a load of bull! Never heard that in my life!! I have used a jumping saddle everyday for everything with all my previous ponies only now considering getting a dressage saddle to allow my boy to have full movement of his shoulders as i know the jumping saddle restricts it a bit and also going to start some dressage comps but theres no reason why you shouldnt use a jumping saddle all the time

I only have the one saddle, and its a jumping one with pretty big blocky knee rolls so its used for everything hacking, dressage jumping commonriding, it does however make me ride shorter than usual due to where the blocks are but i have never felt taz being so free through his shoulders after having lots of people tell me that a forward cut jump saddle would not fit a horse with big shoulders
