Ive been using roundings with my beast xc,as 2 reins just gets tricky!! obv the roundings make the bit slightly less effective, can u use just 1 rein?leaving the other ring on the pelham bit free?? I only ask as someone eventing in H&H this wk is doing just this!!Bit would hang safe in the mouth with just 1 rein??Does anyone do this???(i prob havent made any sense at all??)

Best not to use it on the curb ring only as it changes the action worse than oundings. On the top only is about as effective as a snaffle. I'd stick to roundings if you don't like two reins.

We did that once for a day at camp when Alice's little cob went mental and became unstoppable. I wouldn't recommend it at all- if you need something a lot stronger maybe a cheltenham gag. It's what we used in the end and Henry actually listened and respected it.

I wouldn't personally - I used roundings on a pelham on a v strong pony out hunting for years and the bit worked a treat that way.

I don't think they should have used that pic in H&H this week - pelham incorrectly used with one rein, and open fronted tendon boots XC

might point out,,,william fox pitt and ollie townend both use open fronted tendon boots on all their horses....

i have no opinion either way, but lots of people do this without issue...

I know they do.........but they are much less likely to get it wrong at a fence and cause their horse to bash its legs than the rest of us (who do get it very wrong occasionally and rely on our nice horses being good natured enough to get us out of a hole).

I'm sure a lot of younger riders see pics of a 'name' using open fronted boots xc (or using a bit in an incorrect way as in OP's example) and think I'll do that too if they do it.
