How many of you out there own up to using your phone whilst riding?

Personally I cant because as soon as loosen my reins my horse would just shoot off. i always carry it with me though incase of an emergancy.

Also could you please help settle an argument, is it actually illegal to use your mobile whilst riding (and for cycling) on the road?

I know its not a very sensible thing to do so please dont tell me off, its just an ongoing yard debate. I said I would ask on here.
Thanks

I *Think* it might be illegal to be riding on the road with your phone. Also incredibly dangerous. Have never ridden whilst on my phone, and never plan too. But have had a few HHO people ringing me whilst they were riding

I carry mine and have answered it twice, only as it was my son ringing and it was safe for me to have the reins in 1 hand.

The thing I don't get is riders plugged into their ipods/mp3's while actually on the road - insane!!!

But I do remember reading it.

If someone rings me when I am riding around the riding field I will answer it, explain I am riding, and say I will ring back as soon as I get off. If I am out hacking I don't answer it.

Hmm. I think you might have imaged it and are just stating something is the law/ilegal without any factual basis!

definately I see no problem with using phone when out riding and I do so often. I would use my phone on bridleways and the v v quiet lane that I live on, but not on a 'proper' road - mainly out of concern over the kind of image I want to convey to other road users. If riders appear blase about road safety, it doesn't exactly encourage drivers to take care when passing horses on the road IMO

I have had a well known pro event rider ring me to do some work for them whilst they were in the middle of schooling - phone wedged in her hat and she was doing canter work but could hold a perfectly compesmentus (sp!) conversation! ahhh what it is to be a pro rider!

Guilty as charged. I've made and answered and calls and have sent texts when riding on the roads, but only when there is no traffic coming.

Note to self to show daughter this thread......to convince her that it is dangerous to:
a) answer mobile phone
b) ring friends whilst hacking
c) listen to music ((on headphones)) whilst hacking
d) why is it then when I (mum) calls it goes t answer phone........

All the time too, and yes sometimes I wedge it into my hat harness! It is suprising how accurately you can do canter figure of eights with one hand when it is necessary

I slip my phone under the strap of my hat as well when riding, although must admit I though it was illigal to ride on the roads and be on the phone as well - cant remember who told me - think it was my OH's dad, a copper of sorts - just found this ''You're not legally allowed to use your mobile phone (or send text messages) while riding along roads !. If you get a call or want to make one, you need to pull off the road or dismount to take the call'' half way down here -

I admit to answering my phone when riding, i run my own business so i often grab work time to ride when quiet. However the downside of doing this is i always have to answer my phone. Sometimes calls can get manic & it's always just as my horse starts working well.

Horse is great he knows now that he's to stop when the phone rings,im sure he loves my phone lol. Im not good enough to ride one handed & answer business calls at the same time lol.

Yes, carry it always as I hack out in a 2000ha nature reserve so in case of accident it is always good. I will answer the phone if it rings, none of the horses I have ridden has worried about the phone ringing or continuing at the pace they are going during a conversation.

My OH does it a lot, both phone calls and texts and it drives me NUTS. I always carry a mobile in case of emergency, but never use it on horseback.

To those that take and make calls whilst riding, can I ask WHY?

I constantly use a mobile while at work the very last thing I want to do is use the stupid thing when not working. Riding is my time to concentrate, relax, enjoy the experience and company of my horse etc, how can I possibly concentrate on what I'm doing, or enjoy watching the buzzards or pay attention to what my horse is telling me if I have some idiot babbling away in my ear.

I don't use my mobile whilst riding as it's dangerous, if you are texting you cannot be in full control of your horse. Using a hands free as long as your are not on the road is ok, I guess

I have to use my phone on way back from hack (only temp) as gate to enter stables is very heavy and on road way so someone comes to open up and close,no way could I do it and control horse to ensure bum does not go out onto road I am on a path that runs down the side of a road I never answer any calls or make any other calls waiting on gate getting moved further into yard and I would not hack out unless I have checked someone will be there for me in and out.
